Crankshaft Gear Removal

My buddy has a '91 Pickup SR5 and he is replacing his crankshaft seal. He had issues getting his crankshaft pulley off, but with the help of a pulley puller, was finally ableto get it off. Nowww, he can't get the gear off of the crankshaft. We have tried prying it off, WD-40 and a rubber mallet, butstill haven't had any luck. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Which engine?

If it's the 3VZE then use 2 screwdrivers and rags as seen on page EG2–38 from the FSM here.

If it's the 22RE then you'll need a gear puller as seen on page EG1–42 here.

Hey
I'll be doing this soon to replace my timing chain. Does anyone have a picture/name/size gear puller they've used to pull off the crank pulley and/or crank gear on a 22re?

I use an air hammer and a pry bar...

But I use the vibrations or concussion to get it off, I DO NOT beat it off.

I've been lucky to put a pry bar on it where ever I can and use the hammer behind the pulley. I push on the pry bar and pull the trigger of the air hammer gun about half way.

In my mind it's the see sawing of the pulley between the pry bar and the air hammer ON the crank that gets it off.
