A couple of oil related issues

First off, '95 4runner 22re 5spd.

1) It loses oil. It has been since I bought it 18K miles ago. It is sucking oil through the PCV valve. It stopped for a week after I replaced the head gasket. Then again for a week after I replaced the PCV valve with a TOYOTA valve. Theres only minor exterior leaks, one being the valve cover gasket which I just have been putting off replacing even though I have the part. The other is sometimes between the block and the oil pan in the front. Very minor. Only leaks from there every so often.

2) Oil pressure increases as oil level decreases. Dont know if this is a problem or not, or signs of something going out, but it has done it since I bought it as well. Always use 10w-40 in the summer and 5w-30 in the winter.

Any thoughts?

Also, non oil related, but its in the -20F and colder right now. The other day, I went to the store, left the rig running while I went in, it was fully warmed up, I wasnt in the store but 10 minutes and came back out and the 4runner had cooled down. As in the temp gauge had gone from half way to about 2 needle widths below that and the idle was back up to 1100 rpm. Then last night at work, I started my truck 15 minutes before I was supposed to leave but didnt get out of there until 30 minutes later, and the 4runner wasnt warmed up all the way yet. Never had a problem last winter. This past summer I had put 50/50 pre-mixed coolant in. Could that be a problem? I know I should have at least 60/40 for cold temps, but could it be that much of a problem?

50/50 is good till -35 so that's not the problem (yet).

Check your thermostat.

Thermostat was replaced with a new TOYOTA unit last spring. Perhaps check it anyway..

In winter, it's the "W" number (left hand) that should be different, not the right hand number, which is viscosity at operating temp. Op temp is the same, winter or summer, and so whatever is appropriate in the summer is still correct for the winter. Better to use a 5W-40 or 0W-40. Since it sounds like you have some blow-by, using a 40 would be better than a 30. Especially if you are not using a synthetic 5W-30 - the petroleum 5W-30s are mostly viscosity index improvers, and they break down quickly - most 5W-30s will shear to 5W-20 in 2 or 3 thousand miles.

If it's Toyota pre-mix you are using, be aware that it will corrode the solder in your radiator and heater core. I would use Toyota Red coolant at 55 or 60 percent, for Alaska: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...nt-faq-192781/

The coolant should not have anything to do with how quick the motor cools or gets hot - that will have more to do with thermostat, water pump and radiator. Although in the summer, too high a percent antifreeze can be a problem because it's water that does the cooling: antifreeze does not transfer heat well at all, so anything over 55% can cause overheating in hot weather. Not likely to be a problem in Alaska in the winter, lol.
