Changing W56 Input bearing

So My trans is getting bad in my truck. I have a spare but the input bearing is bad. The rest is fine though so i just want to change the bearing. I can get the bearing for $85 from the stealership.

If anyone can inform me of the easiest way to get it off the shaft from this point.


I don't want to have to take the shafts out and was hoping someone has done this and figured out an easy way of doing it.

Well I got it off using a very long 2 arm puller. Now I just have to get the bearing (trying to find somewhere other then stealer) and figure out how to push it back on without damaging anything.....

Im curious, did your tranny have whinning sound in 4th and 5th. The reason I ask is mine is whinning louder than before, thanks for any help

The whining was in all gears except 4th (since 4th is straight drive, no torque on countershaft). Also if you can here it rolling when it is sitting in no gear then your input may be gone. If you are having a whine in 4th then I would look somewhere else like output bearing or output bearing in transfer case, something speed dependent.

Best way to get the bearing back on is in a press, if you dont have that option, put the tranny in the freezer, one of the old chest types works best, and put the bearing in the oven at about 200 degrees. It will take the tranny 6 or 8 hours to do its thing, the bearing about 30 minutes. Should fall on the shaft, if not have a peice of pipe that will set against the inner race ready to tap it on.

Careful not to overheat the bearing if you try that method, anything more than 200° is too much. What I've done that works just fine is to tap it on with a brass drift pin. Using the inner race as the impact point, and going in a cross pattern. 1 tap 12 o' clock, 1 tap 6, 1 tap 3, 1 tap 9, untill fully seated. The pipe/tubing method is a better option if avalable.

I was going to do the pipe thing. I will do both I think. I will put the trans outside (canada winter) and heat the new bearing up in the wife's oven (hehehe). Thanks for the help guys.

Thanks flash 319, my whin is in 4th & 5th, it almost sounds like the gear shifts are vibrating.I put in Marlins shifter socket replacement parts. Im wondering, it started after I put a new stiffer transfer case mount in.Maybe harmonics I hope. The output bearing on the RF1A transfer case, can you pull it off while attached or do you have to take the tranny and transfer case out.If you can drop the driveshaft and flange , the 7 bolt cover on the end can you get at it that way? Thanks Im open to all advice

Not sure on the miles. over 350k km though. I have gone through a few trans and lost track of where this one came from. I just know that it was noisy.

You should maybe start a thread on your problem. I have not had a transfer case apart, never had a problem with any. If you have an extra-cab truck check the hanger bearing on the drive shafts or even the diff pinion bearing/oil/seal. Make sure your trans oil is good. The bearings will whine if the oil is low.
