The other question I had is the clutch start cancel switch - is its light supposed to remain on if you've used it to start with? Mine does and it makes me think something is wrong.

Can a person learn to do this without destroying much or is it way wiser to learn on a beater about to be scrapped?

Above is only OK if one makes it a habit to check that transmission is in neutral before activating Clutch Safety Cancel switch, because many drivers park trucks in first gear for additional parking braking. I realized this, because I used to activate safety cancel for weeks in order to troubleshoot my intermittent no crank issue. One day, I took truck to shop for maintenance work. When I got in and started, using safety cancel as a habit, truck "jumped" because mech had appropriately parked it in first gear. Fortunately, there was nothing in front
Correct, Chef. Safety Cancel has "holding" circuit. It will stay active until you turn off ignition.

It real easy to do. Going up in gears is easy just pull the shifter where you want it to go and apply steady pressure on the stick. Once the engine drops to the right rpm it will drop right in. You have to be pretty quick for some gears though. For down shifting you just have to rev the engine in between gears so it, once again, hits the right rpm level and the transmission drops into gear. All you can do is try! It is possible to drive a standard without using a clutch pedal, even from a stand still.
