Auto trans not shifting int. replaced solenoids already.
About 3 months ago my 92 4runner stuck in 3rd gear at a stop sign. I limped it back home, the next day it was ok again. I did some research and found the shift solenoids are a common failure in these transmissions. I replaced them and its been fine since. Yesterday I took off and it wouldn't shift past 2nd, rpms went way up and no shifting! I got it back home, waited a few hours and it worked fine again. I checked for error codes and found code 14 for the engine and none for the trans.
What would the next thing to check? the Trans ECU? I have heard there is a separate computer for the trans and I have heard its all one computer for the engine and trans. Anyone know which is correct and where is the trans one located?
Thanks,
Michael.

Self diagnosis is built into the electrical control system.Seperate from the engine.Warning is indicated by the Overdrive off" indicator light. The diagnostic can only be read when overdrive switch is on.If switch is in the off position the overdrive light is lit continuously and will not blink. The diagnostic code can be read by the number of blinks of the overdrive "off" indicator light when terminalS TE1 and E1 are connected. So make sure ignitio and Overdrive switch are on.

Thanks roofmaster, I did the diagnostics correctly. The OD light flashed twice per second indicating nothing wrong. I did get an error code before I replaced the solenoids.

Adjust your tps, my truck was stuck in 2nd, it was a bad tps that wasnt throwing a code. The tps is related to the trans as it sends a signal when to shift as well as a few other things. Also check your kickdown cable is adjusted right.
