antenna troubles...

So I already did a search but could'nt find an answer...

History: Got called in to work today at 08:00 [raz a frazin Sunday!] and came out to find my antenna snapped off...

So I need a new Antenna... I am wondering if I should take the opportunity to go with a power antenna or just replace the old reliable fixed mast unit.
I know some folks have problems with the power retraction but it would be nice not to have it up when the radio is not on or when parked...
any thoughts?

also need a good low cost unit which ever I go for if any body has for sale...

also broke the stupid park brake cable today but thats another story...

thanks for the help aviator

You could get an aftermarket power antenna from a good auto parts or car stereo shop. Or grab a factory power antenna setup from a junkyard.

First step would be check under the fender liner for a factory plug. If the plug is there, I would suggest a factory electric antenna. It is super easy to install, and its plug and play. Plus much more reliable than those junk cheap aftermarket things. not to mention mounts up much cleaner!

If no plug, just buy a replacement mast from Toyota and you;'re golden. I think a factory manual antenns assembly, which includes the wire, mast, base, and everything needed is $33 list from teh dealer.

http://12.4.198.132/S-Kkpav2t910d/Ap...f=N&tab=review 10 bucks..

I bet its decent too, I just wonder if it will truly work as I have no idea how a manual one mounts up to the fender. Is it a pressure type clampw ith the rubber and whatnot?

Those antennas are terrible. It uses the fender as a mount point, and there is nothing to keep it moving back and forth. Eventually it does one of two things: Fatigues the metal and causes cracking, or loosens up and moves back and forth, scraping off the paint and causing a major PITA.

Factory manual antennas mount both at the hole in the fender, AND to a welded bracket on the inner fender so it cannot move around or come loose.

I just bought a used power antenna off a 96 4Runner to replace the stationary antenna on my 95. I'll let you know how it goes once I get around to the install.

So I went by the dealer on the way to work today to get a price for an antenna... $53.00CDN for a fixed mount. And posibly over $200.00 for a power depending on what I need to get....
Talk about getting gouged! I may just order from a US dealer and save some cash...

I wouldn't go with a power antenna especially if you live in cold weather most of the year. Chances are it will break sooner or later when it ices over. I already replaced the antenna on my 4Runner that I've owned for 3 years and it's only cold here 3 months out of the year.

I would replace it with an aftermarket stubbie antenna for around $20. I put a 9" on my P/U. I believe www.performanceproducts.com carries them.

I like the 1st gen 4Runner power antennas. They have a separate switch to raise/lower the antenna independent of the radio. You can leave the antenna down and still have some reception. Also, if playing a tape or CD, the antenna can be left down even with the radio on.

Av-

I've got a functional power antenna motor if you're interested ($$?). The mast stopped retracting/extending about a month ago because the toothed band broke inside the mast broke, but the motor appears to work fine running nearly 20-30 seconds every time I started/stopped the truck.

I replaced it with a Taco whip...

try that Toyotapartsales.com website.

I can also order stuff from the dealer for a 20% discount if anyone wants me to. Just gotta pay via credit card, and pay for shipping to.

You may be spending more on shipping than its worth AV.

I'm one of the fortunate ones with an original power antenna that still works and my truck is about 9 years and and has 135k on it. My antenna isn't manually controlled but it is connected to my HU just like it was stock so that it knows if I'm listening to the iPod or CD it doesn't go up when I don't need it.
