94 Toyota 4WD - Code 71 / Code 25

I have a 94 toyota p/u 4WD with a 22re . Truck has about 85k miles. I have owned this truck for about 6 months. This is first Yota I have owned, and I love it.

Lately, I have been getting a code 71. I clear the code (reset the computer), and a couple of weeks later, code 71 again.

I know code 71 is the EGR system probably. Maybe a vacuum leak, stuck valve, etc. etc. etc.

I still have not had a chance to take the problem to a mechanic, and after weeks of blowing the 71 off, I have now gotten code 25. I believe this is a lean condition.

This last week I have noticed that the engine temp has been going up significantly when I stop at a light, or when I drive at low speeds for extended times. Once I take off and get on the highway, my temp goes back to normal.

I recently replaced Thermostat, Hoses, Radiator, WaterPump.
I also just put in a new O2 sensor (because the wires appeared to be fried on the last one).

Before I haul this thing into a shop, are there any easy things I can do to isolate and fix the problem?

This has been somewhat of a project truck for me, and I am definitely not mechanically inclined. However, I really want to learn about this truck and do as much maintenance on my own as possible.

On a scale of 1 to 10 I'm about a 3.5 when it comes to mechanics. But like I said, I'm eager to try anything on my own before wheeling it into the shop.

Any advice would be greatly appreaciated.

Thanks.,

MM

AIR/FUEL RATIO LEAN INDICATOR--LEAN SIGNAL SENT TO ECU FROM O2 SENSOR

--INJECTOR FAULT(S)

--FUEL PRESSURE

--OXYGEN SENSOR

--AIRFLOW METER OR MAP SENSOR

--IGNITION

--ECU

Here are the code possibilities for a code 25. Check fuel pressure. A clogged filter or weak pump will make it run lean,, lean = hot.

Edit -- it's almost NEVER the ECU ( according to the conventional wisdom found here )

How can I check the fuel pressure without going out and just replacing the fuel pump/ fuel filter.?
