91 4runner New Tranny Worth it or Junk it? HEEEELP!!
Here's my situation.
I have a 1991 4runner sr5(?) that all of a sudden doesn't go into reverse anymore and is very difficult to put into 5th gear. Everyone says that it's the tranny.
The shop quoted me about $600.00 to remove and install a rebuilt tranny plus the cost of the rebuilt tranny itself. So I'm thinking aboutr $1500 total. My mechanic says that there is a possibilty that the problem could just be the shifter but he would still need to drop the tranny to find out($600).
So should I fork out the cash or just make that move for a new car. Obviously I don't have a whole lot of extra money to just buy a new car and I love my 4runner(320,000 miles now, original owner).
What should I do??
The exterior of my 4runner isn't much to look at. It has a dented front bumper, dented rear bumper, a small dent above the rear driver side bumper on the body, and a few small dings here and there. The killer is the mileage on the motor(320,000) but the motor was rebuilt. I guess this particular model had a recall and the motor was rebuilt? I doubt that I'd get much more than $2,000.00 for my poor 4runner woth the rebuilt tranny so I'm not sure that I'd want to invest that money when I could use that for a down payment.

Would a broken shifter seat cause your vehicle to not be able to reverse? Please let me know. I'm very close to just junking it and getting a different car.

I would have to say that the decision is totally up to you. The one thing you have going for you is that you know what you already have in your Runner. On the other hand, if you can't do any of the work yourself then you are at the mercy of the mechanic so it may be cost prohibitive.
I would suggest trying to do the shifter repair suggested by nmtoy first. It seems simple enough to do yourself. Then I would consider looking at used trannys rather than rebuilts. You could save several hundred dollars. Finally, read up a little and see if it is something you may be able to tackle yourself.
I would lean toward a used tranny and replacing it myself but I also have a garage and tools available. If you're in an apartment it may not even be an option.
Good luck.

Lots of people have good things to say about the shifter seat bushing repair - do a search, you'll get lots of info. IIRC, it's about $20 - would be worth a try!
