90 22re swap into 89 toyota truck questions
Alright, recieved a 1989 yota pickup for free...good price huh. Body is solid, bed, frame, etc all solid which was a huge surprise seems how my 88 had major rot. Anyways, the guy who owned it, never marked any wires or vaccum hoses when taking stuff apart, so i'm having a good time trying to figure where stuff goes. The main problem, is the motor he bought for a replacement is a 1990 22re and so far all of the connecter plugs haven't matched up. Luckily he had some of the stuff from the old motor like the fuel rail with injectors and some of the sensors. Does anyone know what major problems I am going to run into trying to retro the 90 22re into my 89? Does anyone have a good wiring diagram and vaccum hose diagram. I have a haynes but it is worthless. Another problem I have noticed is that the emissions seem to be different setups. Now what I thought would be a quick plug and play install has turned into a headache.....any help is appreciated!

First step is get the FSM both volumes, they're expensive compared to haynes or chilton but worth every penny. Also do you have digital camera? This project could take awhile but hey it was free so if you ever get ready to sell it look at all the profit. Also search all the forums you can there is a wealth of knowledge out there. Good luck and I'll help you all I can.

Thanks bodo, it should be an interesting swap. I just ordered a factory manual on cd, but i'm going to wing it in the mean time. I'll work on it some more tomorrow and let you know what I run into. Thanks again!

Yeah the cd's are good but I hate taking a laptop in the shop to work on something greasy fingers and all. I'd rather have a book sitting there it's just easier for me. The long block is the same form 85' efi to 95'. Do you have the old motor? What condition is the engine bay in, I mean is the intake just hanging in there or is everything pulled out? When I built the my stroker I had it on one stand and pulled my original motor and put it another and swapped all the parts over. Now hooking things up that weren't labeled is another thing.

The newer block is bolted up to the tranny (noticed the bolts from the trans to transfercase are missing) and the lower part of the intake manifold and the fuel rail from the old engine is mounted. I switched all but one of the sensors with the ones from the original engine. Now i'm to the point of running the harness and then mounting the upper intake and hooking up vaccum hoses. I'll take a pic of one of the wires that I have no idea where it goes..lol. Gonna work on it for a few hours tomorrow. None of the stuff was labeled when the guy took it apart so I have to figure out the vaccum and wires from square one.
Also, how do you tell which plug goes to which injector? I thought they would have made them with some markings or something to identify what goes to what, but they didn't.

I no nothing is matching up, so maybe the engine came from a 92. The guy who bought the motor told me 90, but you guys have more knowledge about this stuff than he does.
