89silverpu's 1989 Pickup Build-Up Thread

so it’s a little late since I’ve already done quite a bit to my truck but I’ve been wantin to join all my old mod threads into one build up thread. So I got bored and here it is…

The first things I did were add some 31” Pathfinder A/T’s on some standard AR black steel rims, rock sliders, and a Bestop Supertop for trucks:

[IMG]http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/6717/phot0008ak0.jpg[/IMG

Then after driving around like this for a few years, last summer I started doing some major mods…

First thing up was the E-locker retro fit with 4.88 gears (original thread can be found here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...-build-183550/)

EDIT:

Tools/parts you will need:

- e-locker third from a TRD 4x4 Tacoma or a 4runner with the factory e-locker
- Toyota factory e-locker gasket to mark where to cut out and drill holes
- Toyota factory e-locker studs (long)
- Electronic actuating harness/switch (got mine from 12voltguy.com....highly recommended)
- 17/64" drill bit
- 8mmx1.25 tap
- I had a local welding shop modify my axle, but if you're going to do it yourself...Welder, plasma cutter, drill press (could use cut off wheel instead of plasma cutter just takes longer)
- 4'' angle grinder
- Good file to even out surface after adding extra bead of weld
- spray paint
- brake clean
- RTV Grey gasket material
- Tools necessary to remove rear axle assembly

Note: if you are setting up your own gears, you'll need a regular 8" ring and pinion in whatever gear ratio, but you'll need an e-locker specific install kit.

Take the axle out...

After taking the third out, take out the three studs you will not be using...

Put on the toyota factory gasket and mark where the holes need to be drilled and what needs to be cut out...

(next 2 images taken from 4x4wire.com write up)

Cut, drilled, and tapped with extra material added on the outside of the newly drilled and tapped holes for more surface for the gasket to seal...

E-locker third slid into place after cleaning all the metal shavings out really well and coating the rim with ultra gray gasket maker (axle must be in locked position)...

All painted up...

Then I added some 33x10.50 BFG All Terrains:

Then since I knew I was gunna add dual cases but wouldn’t be able to afford them for a while, I ordered a TG dual case crossmember and modified it to work with one case for the time being:

Then I added the dual cases (Original thread found here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...-cases-186883/ )

Then I messed up my stock front bumper and got an MC front bumper, I didn’t like how open it was, so I welded in some 1/8th inch flat stock to close it out and I welded on some light tabs since it didn’t come with any of those either:

And that’s all for now, I’m gunna be doing some other stuff here this summer, hopefully a winch, hand throttle, cut the fenders up and probably some other random things. I’ll spend more time later and add other mods that I’ve done such as my half doors, CB, radio etc…nothing else too exciting.

Nice build and pics. Just wondering the air pressure your run for the rocks and daily driving as I recently got some 33x10.50 AT's. I think my MPG has gone up with them with the V6 - 4.56.

Trail, depending on what kind it is, if it's heavy rocks/snow I go down to about 12 psi and a basic trail I go down to about 20 (never lost a bead). On the street I am at 35 psi.

Thanks man, it's a pretty straight forward swap but if ya have any questions just ask! Your 4runner will be killer once you swap that in! What gears did you decide to go with?

Pretty sure 4.88... i figure that theyll be good for my current 32s and possible 35s after long travel... only thing that worries me is bigcountrycoustomes and trailgear are both saying that their 8" rebuild kits work for elockers.. when lowrangeoffroad has their own kit for elockers with the different bearing... so i gotta ask them and see whats what... other than that.. im gonna get that skid plate and do what you did!

No, Eagle Lakes is just east of Sac, about an hour and 15 past sac a little bit before Donner Lake up 80....

I can't go on sunday unfortunately, I'll be gettin home like 3 from a concert I'm goin to and I have somethin planned for Sunday night already... Idk where you're comin from but it would be like a 3.5 hour drive from San Jose area I think, maybe shorter since you've got a v8 and can go faster than 65-70 especially goin up the mountains lol

I'm pretty sure you need an e-locker specific build kit...and 4.88's would work ok with 35's for sure, and will be extra low for 32's, you'll be windin out about 3400 RPM goin 65 with 4.88's and 32's (assuming you have a 4cyl?)

Thanks! Yeah, e-locker mod is a toss up for best mod improvement wise between the dual cases.

Here are some other random things that I left out earlier:

Kinda ghetto half doors, but they work and look semi decent lol they were cut then 2x4’s were screwed in and then I stretched black pleather over the tops and bolted on the side view mirrors to keep it legal. Oh and the paint on the doors is spray paint, it matches up pretty well though!

Then somewhere before the dual cases I added bucket seats to make room for the new t-case shifter hole. These are out of a 93 Mazda MX-6.

And I think that's all for now!
