i have a 1990 4runner, it is a good truck but when i put it in 4 wheel drive on pavement it hops around shakes and pulls. when it is going in mud or a dirt road it is not half as bad. does any one no what the problem would be? also i am new into the toyota thing but, i dont think that i would ever go back to anything else, how big can i go for tires without lifting my truck?

You dont drive in 4wd on pavement period. Only in dirt, grass, mud, gravel, etc.

The hopping is due to binding in the drivetrain. Not supposed to use 4WD on high traction surfaces like pavement.

we have a paved road here that is a 45% grade in some spots. sometimes you have to use 4wd on paved surfaces

as for tire size just stick with 31s. seriously

Can you give us more history and some specs, ie gears. What is hopping around mean, when does it do it. starting, stopping, turning?

I would find that hard to believe. 45* is STEEP, like seriously hard to stand on, most "steep" ski slopes are closer to 30*. Stuff over 45* are usually referred to as "cliffs".

Oh, and you don't need 4WD, you need low range. Either twin stick or manual hubs takes care of that ...
