3k rpm @ 65mph
This normal for a stock geared 4runner? I hooked up an autometer tach today and was a little surprised to see it turning 3k @ 65 on the freeway. I guess I've been spoiled by the 6spd lol. What is stock gearing anyways? 4.10?

Probibly 4.10's Yes thats stock. Your little 22re is pushing out MAYBE 90rwhp. It needs to rev Im sure after driving it for awhile, your camaro feels like a rocket!

Haha, because toyota invented the 1uzfe quad cam v8
But seriously, it must be aggrivating! I drive around one of our chebby 1500's and it makes my truck feel like a slug.

Obviously I didn't buy the yota for speed...Is there anything you can do to the 22re to wake it up a little bit? I don't need 500+hp like the camaro, just enough to be able to do 70 without a tailwind.
Theres the basics, intake/header/exhaust, but is it really worth the money on a 22re? I've read a little about the cams available..Anyone have before and after numbers of basic mods to the 22re? FWIW, I consider a cam a basic mod..If I can do it in my driveway, it's basic.

I turn about the same with my truck, stock 22re manual with 31s.
technically, your going to have the same RPM to miles per hour no matter what gears you put in, according to your guages anyway, unless you change the speedo gearing. the truck picks up the speed through the tranny, not the diff or wheels, so changing anything after that speed-sencing device will not effect how the truck registers speed
BUT, changing gears and tire sizes will effect you true speed and make it different then what your guages are showing, unless you match them up. but even if you do match them up via rear-end gearing, you're still going to be right at 65mph at 3k RPM, once again, unless you change the speedo gearing...
try it; any of you guys with lower gearing, grab a GPS and hit the road at what it's saying it 65mph... I'll bet your turning the same RPMs... about 3k...
this of coarse only applys if you have the same tranny... the tranny gearing will effect that too if the final gear is lower or higher...

I found my '85/22RE got better MPG with 33" tires running 5.29 gears vs. 4.88 gears. Maybe 5%-10% better with the faster revving engine.

My truck is doing about 2400 rpm at 65mph and 3000 rpm at about 125 km/h which is i think around 75 miles per hour. Its an all stock 22re auto with 4.30 gears btw

run the truck at 3k with 4.10s in 5th and then 3k with 4.88's in 5th and your speed (regardless of how it's measured) will not be the same. do the math...

No, your wrong. Unless you correct your speedo, its still going to read the same at 3000rpm. He was talking about perceived speed.

lol...
well, I'm at a loss. I got the truck with 225/75r15's and it pulled hills quite nicely, then I upped it to 265/75r16's, so I've gone from about a 28 to a 31 tire, and I notice the difference in hills, but still...
I haven't recal'd the speedo so the relation between RPM and apparent/displayed speed hasn't changed. So I'm not sure why you're turning 3000 at 65... unless the truck was regeared before you got it.
