Hello folks,

I'm needing some advice/experienced opinions on a steering damper. Toyota wants a vital body part in exchange for OEM, but I need something just as easy to install at a fraction of the cost....without going POS.

You see, I'm not sure what companies will require a mounting kit (i.e. Rancho) and who has a direct fit. There's not a lot of details on the websites I've looked at.

So, if anyone would like to offer some assistance I sure would be grateful.

I just did the Old Man EMU this last weekend. It is a straight bolt on. Nothing extra needed. Is incredibly easy, until you get to getting the stock bolt out... I tried ALL of the provided suggestions. Pickle Fork ... lubricants ... blow torch ... BFH ... I couldn't get the thing to budge. After reading endless posts, I thought I remembered someone saying that they used a tie rod puller. That finally did the trick. And it being a loner tool at your friendly neighborhood Auto Zone, you might just think about grabbing it in preparation.

Just a suggestion/tip.

Where's the best price...where are you all getting the OME's for $50? 4x4 connection has them on sale, but the price is $63.41...then shipping.

there are a couple shock companies that sell bolt in replacements, but the ome is definately the way to go. Advance auto has Monroe, KYB, explorer pro comp, and moog stabilizers, but im not sure which out of those are direct bolt ins

AFAIK - I have an old aftermarket one - dunno - maybe doesthtech?

It used a "stud" in place of the OEM "tie rod end" fitting....

The stud's nut scrapes the relay rod a smidge - but it all seemed to work fine...

+1 for old man emu. Had it on there for almost a year, and it rocks. Purchased mine through strap22 (trdparts4u.com)
To get the stock off you definately have to give it some force. I used a ball joint separator and a big a$$ hammer.

As far as installing, I think one with a kit might be easier! I just left my OEM one in place because it was being stubborn and bolted the rancho unit on. Piece of cake. I just skipped all the torch, pickle fork, BFH stuff.

I just put a Monroe in my '90 from Schucks. It was a bolt-in. Cost was $30 if you print out the internet price. $40 was the regular store price.

Yeah, I guess I could do that...except the original was damaged in a wreck I had and now makes it sound as if the front end is going to fall off. Besides, a Rancho w/kit is around $90...double

Thanks for replying everyone. I will see what prices strap22 has for OME. I told my wife (her rig) about the reputation of OME and her eyes got real big..lol. She goes...,"Ooooo!!! Get it!" We both like quality. But, then that's why we have two Toyotas. So, if that's what she wants who am I to argue? Besides, I've been dying to try something of theirs, anyway.

I didi a Procomp, it took me 10min ot install and made a huge diffrence off road. My stocer was still working (not leaking) but the Procomp one made a huge diffrence. Its a direct bolt on kit cost me $55CND so about $40US.

is this available from 4wheelparts? im off to florida in a few months and im going to pick one up. looks a well worth while mod cracking install post as well.

oh yeah can you get a pro comp one to match the shocks im running now?

This cost me $117 in Australia, make sure when your fitting it you get this end in first, then the other side, also they are a universal part so the rod on the side with the arrow wont go in all the way, mine had a few mill to go, that is why i bashed it in so many times in vain (rusted area), been in for a year now, no probs.

I just put a Superlift/Rough Country on mine and it was a bolt on replacement. It made a world of difference in the bump steer I was getting with the Iroks.

I used a pickle fork on the old one and it came off with about 5 whacks of the bfh...

I think the Rough Country version is only like $35.

I had a direct bolt on Heckethorn back in 97 I used on my 88. For my 91 I used the Rancho with the brackets, etc. I don't even know if Heckethorn is still around. It lasted 100K miles and still worked great when i got rid of the truck
