By AFM you mean Air Flow Meter? Everything is plugged in that i know of. What you are saying kinda makes sense though, it starts up great but then its like something is shuting it off. I was looking over diagnostics in my chilton and was wondering if i could still get trouble codes without being able to warm it up first. I guess I'm going to get out and try it tomorrow and we'll see what happens.

I forget the name of the manufacturer, i'll look it up and get back to you. I have a new problem. Engine running really sluggish and surges at idle. I've got trouble codes 42 and 52. The first being a knock sensor problem, which would explain the bad performance. The problem is i dont think i have a knock sensor at all. When i removed the old engine i noticed an extra plug dangling below the intake on the passenger side. I looked and looked for the sensor it plugged into with no luck. Now i believe that plug goes to the knock sensor. Can anyone tell me exactly where the knock sensor is supposed to be? I looked in the archives but could only find threads on the v6 model, I also looked in my chilton manual and would'nt ya know they show every engine but the 22re.
The other trouble code 52 is the throttle position sensor. I checked out the t.p.s with an ohm meter and it checked out ok with the info i got at techinfo.toyota.com. I checked the corresponding wires at the e.c.m also with the info i got at techinfo.toyota.com and the voltage was really low. Any ideas on what this means? could it be the ecm itself? I guess the next step is to completely check the wires to and from. God what a pain in the asterisk. I also did a quick check of many other systems at the ecm. The power is good everywhere else i checked.

NOT 100% sure this will help, but my 89 FSM lists a code 42 as:
Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal
Diagnosis: NO "Spd" signal for 5 seconds when engine is above 2500 RPM
Trouble Area: Vehicle speed sensor circuit - Vehicle speed sensor - ECU
& code 52 is:
Knock sensor
Diagnosis: Open or short circuit in signal
Trouble area: Knock sensor - knock sensor circuit - ECU
Couldn't find any diagnostics for the knock sensor or speed sensor...I'm new to 22re's as well, so I guess this is a classic case of the blind leading the blind. Sorry not much help.
Hopefully someone will chime in....

Sorry i messed up. I meant to write trouble code 41 and 52. 41 is definately knock sensor. I just dont know where exactly it is supposed to go since the old engine i pulled out didnt even have one on it, just had the plug from the wiring harness dangling there underneath the intake on the drivers side. I ordered a new one this morning. I almost passed out when they said it would be $173.00, Holy knock sensor Batman!

Nooooo! Don't go to the dealer for parts unless it is an emergency.
You could've got them from 1sttoyotaparts.com for $116.20.
Keep them in mind for future orders
