Around here we use a different ethnic slant to describe this type of hap-hazard repair technique but I think that about covers it

What is it that they check the pistons for?
Piston bores tend to wear unevenly.. Hard to bore one out in the engine bay.

HEHE yes , but I would imagine if your not taking it out then a hone , re-ring and removal of the lip at the top of the bore would be better than just leaving them in till next time eh

As long as your bumper is clean I will kiss it for you ROFL
I will not flame you but if your gonna go that far why not just do it all so you can forget about it for a long long time .
Thats all they are all saying , they just don't want to see you do half or 3/4's of it and then in 3 months wipe your rings or a bore and then have to tear her down again .
Also from the Old School of Wisdom :
We would always frown on putting fresh heads (usually milled thereby increasing compression) on a old or worn bottom end because in no time at all the increased load on the bottom end from the top end being rebuilt would result in all kinds of failures - mains, rods, wristpins, ring lands.
So if you tear it all the way down and rebuild completely then it is all happy and gets to wear in together .

Note : Use the buddy system to remove your motor (and no I do not mean the "Don't ask - Don't tell" buddy system) , ask a buddy for a hand or to borrow his engine lift , what good is a fresh motor if you can't sit and drive comfortably

I would think the first 3 failures would have tipped you off about the in-frame rebuild method?

hehe couldn't resist but I see you have come to your senses. I pull 3.0 V6's to do head gaskets because its easier to work around the motor than from the top only.

If you're on your 4th "rebuild" of a 22RE then you're doing something wrong mate... Is it possible that you've just torn the motor apart 4 times to do 1 rebuild???

Agree.. These motors are rock solid.
After 4 "in frame" rebuilds, are you really saving yourself time overall?
