22re problem while cold engine

Hey everyone got a 91 4runner with a 22re engine and it runs great. I did run into a problem when the engine is cold and im driving around the check engine light will come on and feels like i lose a lot of power in the engine. When the engine gets up to normal running temp and i turn the engine off then on again the check engine light does not come back on and the truck runs great again only if the temp stays warm. Also if i let the engine warm up without driving it no check engine light comes on at all. Not sure if this is a huge issue but its very irritating when i need to be somewhere in a rush. I also want to add that ive tried pulling the codes with a metal paper clip shoved into te1 and e1 terminal and the check engine light never flashed for me. Not sure if the diag plug is not working right or if its me not doing it right. My first guess on this problem was the cold start injector but didnt want to throw down 89$ for this part if im not sure. Has anyone had this problem before? Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

Sometimes it is a pain to jump the terminals you have to push the paper clip or wire a ways inside to make contact. When you have properly jumped them turn the ignition to the on position but don't start the engine. Your check engine light should flash even if you do not have any codes stored.

Yeah, it's kind of hard to guess what the problem is, and isn't even a good idea to try to guess since you are getting a CEL. Knowing what the code is will help narrow things down quite a bit.

Otherwise, my suggestion would be to do a full tune up and adjust the idle and timing with the engine fully warmed up so it consistantly runs fine when warm. Then all we would have to think about is the cold start system.

I fixed this problem! i wasnt getting a code at all so i decided maybe it might be a vacuum leak and sure enough it was. I broke one of the prongs on the blue vsv a while back and completely forgot about it. All i did was remove the vsv from the truck and capped all the prongs and no more check engine light or truck running horrible. Anyone have any idea on what the blue vsv does? It hooks onto the vacuum line rail and the three prong plug on the right side of the intake. Thanks for all of your help.
