22RE idle is all kinds of funky
OK...here we go. I replaced the cylinder head with a new one along with a new auxiliary air valve. I have a great running truck. It's good on gas and has great power but my idle is acting strange..
Most of the time it idles at 1,100RPM but every now and then it will idle too high and start surging (could be from me adjusting the air screw too much). IT starts fine when the engine is cold but after it's warm it never goes down past 1,100 and when I try to adjust my idle down to 750 the truck starts to sputter and sounds like it has some sort of race cam in it which sounds cool but is annoying because I know I don't have a cam but after driving around, my idle will go right back up to 1100. Also, after I've been driving a while and turn off my truck and come back after a few minutes and even hours after the engine has cooled off a bit but isn't cold, it will idle like it has a cam.
I've checked for vacuum leaks and couldn't find anything anywhere I sprayed everything I could get to with carb. cleaner and I couldn't find a leak and definitely not a leak big enough to cause my problem. Oh and my EGR valve is blocked off already to eliminate a previous vacuum leak. I checked my TPS during the install of the cylinder head and it was fine too. Also, cleaned the water temp. sensor.

I would have said adjust the idle, but you've already done an admirable job trying to figure it out on your own. Bump for you, I'd be interested in finding out the solution to your problem is.

Try going to www.4crawler.com and do a search for 22RE idle surge.

Check the valve clearances, and while you have the valve cover off verify that the cam timing is correct.
once that is complete check the ignition timing.
since it sounds like this started after having the head off, it's best to go back and check what you messed with

I'll check to make sure my timing is right again. Just to be sure...when I have my crankshaft pulley on 0° or TDC, my cam key should be at the very top?

the cam key should be straight up, the mark on the cam sprocket should be just to the left of center as you look at it.
The valve clearances should be .008"(intake) and .012" (exhaust) with the engine hot. You can set them to .006" and .010" with the engine cold and that will be close enough to get it running OK

Ok, the timing is perfect then.
I tried to adjust my rockers with those specs. before and got loud tapping and tried again yesterday with the same results. I've adjusted them by hand before and had better luck. .008 and .012 seem too loose and if I tighten the rockers any tighter I have to struggle to get my feeler gauge out but the metal is real flimsy so maybe that's why it's been a pain.
