ok so i recently sold my tacoma and bought a 2wd 94 pickup with a 22re for increased economy.

i have been noticing a gas smell inside the cab sometimes. i parked my truck inside my friend's garage once, and that's when i really got concerned because the gas smell was really strong after i left it in there for an hour or so.

i popped the hood and looked at my fuel rail and injectors with a flashlight. ya, there is no question... they were pretty wet with fuel, but i don't think it's the injectors that are leaking. after cleaning up the wet fuel with some carb cleaner so my truck wouldn't blow up and after driving the truck for a few days i take another look. sure enough, the injectors aren't wet, but there's little connection that goes from the fuel rail to this gizmo in the intake manifold that is DEFINETLY leaking fuel. i can see it dripping and it smells like gas. there is a wire harness plugged into it too. i am not exactly the most experienced when it comes to fuel systems, but i'm in the process of taking some automotive classes at a community college so i have a basic understanding of how everything works.

anyway, i basically just need to know what this little gizmo is called. so i can replace it. i don't think the injectors are leaking because i cleaned them and they are still dry. but there is fuel leaking from that gizmo on my intake manifold. it even looks like there is a gasket that seals it to the side of the manifold. that could be my problem right there.

so ya. can someone educate me a little and tell me what this thing is called and what it's purpose is? i really don't want my truck to blow up

Sounds like you're talking about the cold start injector. Does it look similar to this? Here's a picture of what it looks like and a link of where it goes.

that's it! i just took pictures. i don't have time to post them up right now but i might anyway. so i'm like 99% sure now my cold start injector is leaking. doesn't look too hard to fix though.

so correct me if i'm wrong, the cold start injector basically injects fuel from the fuel delivery rail into the intake manifold when the engine is cold? thus the reason why it idles higher when it's dead cold after just starting up in the morning? i like to learn

Have you tired tightening the bolt that holds the fuel line on to the injector? When I pulled my put on my intake I didn't tighten it enough and it leaked a bit. Also, the little copper washers are actually seals and could have gone bad.

Yeah make sure that bolt is tight. If its not it just spews fuel everywhere. check those copper washers as well because those are the seals.

Its very rare for a cold start injector to go bad.

One more thing, don't just crank down on it as the intake is made out of aluminum and the threads will strip very easily (I know from experience).

just go pick up soem new washers ther cost like 5 cents. But im a 90 pervent sure if you just tighten the bolt it will stop leaking

The "bolt" is hollow and can be damaged if overtightened.

If it looks like it is leaking from the seals then get some new ones and torque it to spec (14 lb/ft)

thanks so much. this should be an easy fix. i'll tighten it and see if it still leaks. if it leaks i'll get some new washers and i'll go from there.
