1994 truck 22-re poss. clutch problems
hey all,
searched and found a few of my questions answered, now i am looking for advice on doing things pro.
i believe that my clutch is slipping, the symptoms are:
i shift into 4th and if i punch it, my RPM's will rise about 1000 RPM and then drop back down before it catches the motor. and my rig is super underpowered for a 22-re i believe (and i know they are weak to begin with).
an example is i had a decently loaded down rig (about 500-600 lbs including people) and i was going up a moderate grade (tioga pass going into tuolumne, CA) and i had to floor it in 2nd and barely make it up the thing, is this normal?
also if i have to replace the clutch what should i go with? no recreational wheeling, just dirt roads and occasional mandatory wheeling and i am looking to keep the price down.
thanks a ton.

Are you smelling an odd smell, like burning clutch/burning brakes? that would be your clutch. sounds to me like a clutch as well, and you will likely need a new/resurfaced flywheel.
I would go OEM. I just installed an OEM clutch in Idanity's rig, so if you want to know about quality, just ask him how his clutch feels.

Sounds like clutch to me. OEM is fine, stay away from inexpensive aftermarket replacments (trust me) - make sure you turn the flywheel and replace the pilot & throw out bearings. Don't skip any of these steps or you'll be doing it again.
Aftermarket clutches: centerforce I has worked well for me. Marlin makes a bunch of different setups - all of his stuff is usually very good.
In regard to 2nd gear - I don't know how high that pass is, but you lose power at elevation. 2nd gear wouldn't be out of the question up a significant grade.

i will go oem even if it costs a bit more, was there anything special that needed to be done during the replacement or could basic wrenching take care of it?
also, who could resurface a flywheel? any mechanic shop?
thanks everyone for the reply's
