How old is the clutch? Its possible the rebuild makes enough power to slip it now when it didnt before...

sounds like you get to take out the tranny and clean all the grease off the clutch

if that happen........its better to replace the clutch
don't put grease on the shaft............

put grease on a cloth and just wipe the shaft........no excess residue at all

You are supposed to grease the shaft for the TO bearing, and grease the pilot for the pilot bearing. I like the rag idea...and yea...I think you are beyond cleaning it up now. It kinda gets soaked into the disc.
