3" rear lift and cranking torsion bars ??

Hello everyone ive done alot of searching on the forum and i couldnt really find a good answer. I have a 1991 4runner I went to my local Napa. And i ordered a set of rear coils that are 15.3" and they told me my stock were 12.5" coils. They are pretty much the exact profile (guessing diameter) and are a bit stiffer. I have the usual rear end sag and was wondering if i will have to extend break lines or any other parts of suspension when installing this set of springs. Also to even it out i will be cranking up torsion bars. Will 1 " in the front cause any stress on my cv shafts. Thanks and any response would be much appreciated. The springs wont be in for 3 weeks or so. Also i only payed 69$ for the set of coils.

In my opinion.. Cranking the torsion bars is never a good idea. It decreases your downtravel and makes it ride like a shopping cart.

Get yourself some 1.5" BJ spacers and new shocks.. It will give you 1.5" of lift but keep your ride nice.

When I had my 86, I had my bars cranked for about a month. Then I went back and put them back to stock position, for the reasons Jay mentioned. The ride suffered greatly, and I noticed a considerable negative difference when I was off road.

If you keep your OEM shocks, or at least OEM length, the suspension droop will be arrested before the brake lines are stretched.

yea i cranked mine and i wish id never done it. it rides like a log wagon after you crank them and its really hard on your cvs

i cranked mine on my old single cab ride sucks blew cv axels but i cleared 34s without rubbing plus it didnt matter to me it was just a mudd truck so if you want a crappy ride CRANK EM UP if you dont X2 on the bj spacers!

I have extended shocks up front. I replaced alot of my front end parts when I did the bj spacers, including the brake lines. I used stock replacments and have had no problems...

yeppers, take it from all the guys on here with their experience, including me...

about a month after I got my 91 PU (first Toyota I've ever owned), I cranked mine all the way and put some shackles in the rear, just to get "the look", and I should have never done it...

throws off your alignment so you eat tires if you don't have it re-aligned (which btw should be done after ANY front end suspention work you do), and your front end has about as much suspention movement as, well, the shopping-cart example works perfect to explain it, lol. you also lose every bit of flex your IFS has...

I have since relaxed them SUPSTANTIALLY, but still not quite all the way down to stock; I've retained maybe .5" of lift with a decent ride, but I'll soon be installing BJ-spacer and relaxing them to OEM specs, and removing the front sway-bar at the same time.

So why do you keep telling people to crank the t-bars for lift instead of installing bj spacers or some other lift that doesn't compromise the ride quality?

hahah no. mine odes fine off road since i did it. i replaced my cvs tueday cuz my boots were bsuted before i lifted it. im not dissapointed with it or anything dont get me wrong. i dont mind the rough ride. it has like no flex tho now. but i like it and i think thats all that matters. it does fien for what i do. i just wish i woulda got a 4inch suspensiion lift tho

well, 1.5" BJ spacers and a 2" diff drop is about a 4" lift... and doesn't touch the t-bars other than for an alignment... doesn't make the truck ride harsh...
but you like it, so to each their own.

personally, if I wanted a hard ride, I'd get an f550 with leafs

hey im glad you brought that up. so can you jsut buy a 2inch diff drop and it would lift it that much? if so do you know where u get htem

A diff drop doesnt do anything for lift. It just drops the differential down to keep the CV joints happy..

There is no way to get 4" of lift out of IFS without a bracket lift or long travel..

I'm also missing how a 2" diff drop does anything for lift.

On my 88 4runner, I have 1 1/2" BJ spacers and I put on larger torsion bars and crank them to 1" of lift and have the same ride as before. If you're going to crank the bars, don't do it to the stock ones.
