wheel stud replacement

I know this should be elementary, but im working on the street and really just need to get this done quickly. I need to replace a front wheel stud on my 85 pickup. I have the wheel and brake caliper off, and it seems like if i could just get that brake dust cover off i could bang the old one out and get the new in without taking off the hub. I have searched, but cant find a write up on this. Anyone got one?

you have to pull the hub.

You can drive around with a broken stud.
You're better off waiting until you have time to fix it properly, so as to not rush things and breaking more than you wanted.
