So I found some parts in my oil pan when I replaced the pan seal. I instantly knew it was the timing chain guides. I pulled the front of the motor apart and replaced chain, guides, water and oil pump. Took the time to clean up all the brackets and stuff that had 30years of grime on them.

When I assembled everything, it cranked right up, but I saw this. Carmel colored fluid which normally indicates water and oil mix. Looks like it is coming from this oil pump bolt. I will have to examine closer. Anyone seen this before? I am trying to see how far I need to back track and disassemble.

What engine? 22RE?

1984 4Runner 22R. Checked threads and found a few different issues. And yes, I did install the "hidden" bolt. I did not remove head and dropped oil pan. I did use black RTV on everything.

I did not RTV the oil pump bolts as I have been reading about, so I will attempt that later. Even if the bolts had RTV, why would the leak be that color? It was running fluid at a pretty good rate.

EDIT: You were posting as same time. It's only the one bolt that gets coated per FSM. Failed gasket causing mixing?

Yeah, looks like I should just take it all back off and redo timing cover gasket. At least this time it should be 1/3 of the time. Lol

Your chain might have worn a hole in the cover.
Or less likely, the gasket/RTV failed in one of the coolant passages.

Timing cover was in great condition. No leaks prior. I am starting to think I waited too long to set the timing cover on after applying RTV and it set before I mounted it. I'm gonna redo it all and use more RTV in critical areas and be quicker about mounting.


Of course the wife is not happy about losing her parking space for another few days! lol.

I always use a thin smear coat of UltraGrey on both sides of the gaskets no more that.

What RTV are you using?

I was using the black oil and heat resistant RTV.
