They stopped making engine with double in the middle of 83, but you can upgrade fairly easily to a double wide through 8/84, per Downey.

/me kinda had a brainfart... I knew I was going to go somewhere with my thought...

... if the engine in the 84 has been replaced
... with a say... 85...
and he ordered and was sent the chain for an 84...
the 85 engine would require a shorter chain than the 84...
... and having the 84 chain on an 85+ engine isn't correct...
... thus causing the tensioner to not be able to take up all the slack
... and causing the chain to quickly demolish the guide.

/me almost had an Ace Ventura / bat guano moment there...

don't at ALL know if I'm correct... I'm just hypothelytising.

I don't know how to say yes or no to that question of it being an 85 motor, i doubt it, and when i did the chain everything seemed fine. When i talked to engbldr he said i probably mixed up some of the bolts for the tensioner, because one of them will go too far and then not let the tensioner come out all the way, can anyone shine some light on that one?

as the chain stretched (normal) the tensioner hit the bolt that was too long and was not able to take up any more slack, so the loose chain beat up the chain guide and broke it leaving me where I am now.

well in my 85 pickup with a 22re when i pulled the timing chain to replace it was the 84 model single row.. because it was built in august 84 i am assuming.. the 85 chain i also had did not fit.. different block sizes.. i would havea never figured it out if i didnt have a 89 block with a different shape of piston..

both the bolts for the tensioner are the same. and there is no way for the tensioner bolts themselves to interfere with the tensioner!

am i just missing something here?

Well everyone I still haven't fixed my truck (this Florida weather is sure different than Wisconsin, I've been riding my motorcycle everywhere I need to go, and it's December!) but I do have it stripped down and ready to pull the timing cover, since I'm working in my driveway I wanted to get all the easy stuff done like pulling the radiator and accessories so in one day i can pull the cover and change out the tensioner and guides.

basically this line summarizes my hypothesis, "Sounds like the tensioner isn't extending all the way out due to (a) low oil pressure, (b) wrong bolt in the oil pump top hole keeping the tensioner from extending."

I am thinking it may be easiest for me to just change out the guides and tensioner and leave the 6k mile chain and sprockets on there. My original thinking was so I don't have to pull the crank pulley and deal with retiming the beast, but now I remember I have to pull the pulley (lol) anyway

So I took it apart and what happened was the top bolt that mounts the passenger side chain guide fell out and then it wasn't holding enough tension, allowing the chain to swing wide and tear up the driver side guide as well as just about everything in reach. So I cleaned it up and put in new guides and used loctite this time and hopefully it will not cause me anymore trouble in the future.
