Hello all,

I have just torqued down the head on my 1994 3vze. During the install of the camshaft, I managed to strip out the thread holding #1 cam bearing on the passenger side. Attempting to fix this with helicoil inserts but, I need to remove the dowel/guide that aligns the cam bearing. How would one go about doing this?

Well, it seems I'm talking to myself here LOL. I did manage to get the alignment pins out by using a flathead screwdriver, a hammer & a pair of pliers. I placed the tip of the screwdriver against the outer wall of the dowel and tapped on the end of the screwdriver a couple of times. kept this up all the way around the dowel.

Next, I used a pair of pliers to grab the dowel, twisted left and right until the dowel worked its way out. The dowel is trashed now and is on order from the dealership.

I guess this concludes this thread. If anyone knows of a better way to do this without damaging the dowel, by all means, add to this thread all you want.

hey man I'm in the same boat as you...literally...I am going to have to find an easier and non destructive way of extracting the dowel. I did see a few photos http://picasaweb.google.com/kevin3vz...83991940116050 from this guys project...how much are the dowels from the dealer?

I have seen machine shops use bolt cutters to gain the leverage to grab on flywheel dowels. If anything it puts two small "teeth" on the dowel which are easily filed/buffed smooth.

Just a thought anyway...

well I discovered you dont really need to use a helicoil...you can use a longer bolt
