crazy high revs at idle, and while driving
hey everyone. ive been searching the forums, but cant find anything that sounds close to what happened to me.
yesterday i was getting on the freeway in my 84 pickup and was revved up to about 3k rpm and all the sudden it shot up to about 4k on its own! i pulled over and at idle it was still showing 3k rpms. i drove it off the next exit which was a very very short distance and when i pulled over after the exit the temp was nearing 3/4 and a puff of smoke came from under the hood when i popped it open. when i turn it on now it starts up to 3k rpms still. any ideas?

that happened to me once... turned out to be the black insulation around the throttle cable broke off where its crimped on(at the adjustments nuts) and it slid into the round linkage the cable hooks onto and wouldnt let the carb idle back down.
