body lift problems

I ordered a body lift from 4wheel parts and am kicking my own ass now.Everything has been wrong so far. I got a truck kit,Not a big deal after talking to a tech. The bumper brackets they said were different so there sending new ones.

Heres the problem. All the bolts are WAY too big. They wont fit through the body and most are too short even if they did. I was told when i ordered it that gastank brackets to lift it are included and when it shows up there not there....turns out the company doesnt make those brackets. I got a rubber vent hose tho. I wish i would have ordered the 4crawler kit now and if they wont over night the parts to fix this mess im sending it back and killing my order with them.I hope when the suspension comes its not like this!

Sorry had to vent.

Well IIRC no body lift raises the gas tank, you just get rubber hose to extend the filler next by x".

Cant help you on the bolts... return it and get susp lift

and I know its just a vent..but always include year, model, etc..

If you havent installed this body lift, I suggest you send it back and call Roger Brown at 4crawler. his kist are much higher quality than any other I have ever seen and his service is top notch!

Another vote for :"take it back". Sounds like almost everything they gave you is wrong. You shouldn't have to go out and buy the right bolts when they should have come with the kit in the first place. Definitely, take it back and tell them you want your money. Then spend it on another kit from somewhere else. Which kits are the best will vary with who you talk to...

I know where you are coming from. I bought a kit at a local 4 wheel drive shop. The hardware was crap. The intructions worthless.

I wish I had bought a 4Crawler kit or maybe WaskillyWabbit (sorry haven't looked at yours yet). but I suggest getting it from a source at least familiar with these vehicles.

I called today about the bolt problem. The kit is for an 85 pick up and i need 85 4runner. The guy i talked to yesterday about the wrong brckets looked it all up and sent me the right bolts. The kit was supposed to come with 3/4 bolts and i got 1/2inch the stock are 10mm. He sent those out and a few other bolts and spacers needed for the 4runner.

I got the suspension lift part of my lift today and so far everything looks good. I Guess i will see when we go to install it. Im checking #'s on the parts over and over before i install it tho. I guess while the bodys off and the motors out its a great time to have the frame painted I was supprised tho theres not much rust on it. Id think it would be worse. My 87 truck is way worse then this. When pulling the body off we found one bolt to be rusty and 1 bushing to be worn. The bolts are taken care of and bushings on the way.

Im going to order the"Roger Brown" Gas tank brackets and driveline lift parts pretty soon so i will just deal with the gas tank hangin down for now.I have plenty of other things to do while i wait on that. The interior still needs tobe gutted all the way out and the body needs paint and a small rust repair under the gas filler.I May start a build up thread for it cause there is a lot being done and a major chang in the 4runner

What do you mean by gastank brackets? I dont think there is a way to lift the gas tank.. every BL I have ever seen just has you cut the stock hose and add a x" section....

Glad to hear there taking care of it for you thou...

On an 85 4Runner with a 1" body lift there is no need to do anything to the gas tank/filler neck. I have put 1" body lifts on both my 1st gens (85 and 87)and all it required was spacers and bolts (I was able to use metric).

No real brackets for raising the gas tank, you basically cut the supports off and raise them up:
At 2" body lift, on the 4Runner, you can raise the front of the tank up using the 2" higher pickup tank mounts up front and then modify the rear bracket to match.

I offer a choice or hardware with my kits so you can have stock sized bolts or oversized as you desire:

Wabbit, do you think I would run into any additional problems/issues installing a 1" BL with 2" lift blocks already under my rear springs ('87 4runner)?

I don't think so as the two are really unrelated in how/what they lift.

Yep, suspension and body lift are independent:

Second that! RB will hook you up. Just don't refer to it as a Roger Brown body lift or he'll kill you. I've had my 4Crawler kit installed for two years now, and got everything right on the first try, including hardware, radiator drop bracket, and steering extension. You just have to figure out his awkward online order form.

**edit: I installed a 2" BL on my '03 Tacoma and had no issues with my fuel tank. Different can of worms, I know, but it illustrates that some of these hypothetical problems don't always surface in every install. I'm more than happy to help you install it too buddy!

Got it.
Why don't I ever see reference to steering shaft adjustments/mods when considering BL on 1st gens? (A 1" BL on my '87 for example) Are there any tweaks needed? Got pics?
