I am interested in this also. I have an '84 carb'd, but I want to upgrade to the RE. I would also like to know about fuel tank swaps for the pump necessity. I'm sure I will get flamed on this since I didn't search yet... But I didnt post the original thread... so I'm not in trouble, right?

What are the reasons it will not work?

Anything is do-able.... But what are the minor setbacks?

I tried this a bit ago but I had an 85 truck and was wanting to use an 87 harness and ECU. Everything plugged in and the truck ran but you could not give it gas. It would buck and sputter.

One of the main reasons I figure is in 85 the trucks diagnostic ports were on the driver fender well and the later trucks had the diagnostic ports on the passenger side. So the ECU had to be getting mixed messages and whatnot.

I'm not good with wiring so I just picked up an 85 harness and everything is fine now.

I'm sure if you know what you're doing you could figure it out but it wasn't worth my time.

ECU's are the same for the most part as far as plugging in and programming, altho there's a couple sensors that are different and the harness for the injectors uses a different style plug on the 87(?) and up. I swapped a motor out of an 88 into my 85 and that's the things I ran into. I'm sure a search would turn up even more info.

So if my carb'd 84 were gutted, and everything from an EFI truck were swapped, that would solve any issues. Correct?
I was looking for physical limitations from 3rd or 4th gen into 2nd gen truck issues.

Yeah that would be fine. My 85 was carbed so I removed every wire in the truck and replaced it with a complete 85 EFI harness. Headlights to tail lights.

So if I got a different generation truck as a donor, would everything swap(bolt in)? Or do certain things have to be 2nd generation? Such as fuel tank/electric pump and wiring harness... I know the 22RE engine would bolt in, but what about the rest of the parts?
