85 4x4 22r losing power and bucking

I have a 1985 toyota 4x4 with a rebuilt 22r. I just bought it and when going highway speeds it sometime bucks really hard. It is now losing power and does not want to go but 20 miles per hour up hill. A toyota tech told me it sounded like spark. I put in a new cap and rotor. No change. Should I try plug wires? Or should I be looking at the fuel system? The truck temp stays cool and is not over heating either. Please help. Not a lot of money to fix. If it matters, we are in Phoenix, az and it has been around 110+ degrees.

Thanks,
Mike

check the spark plugs, check out how they look. replace spark plug wires. check the timing. check the carb adjustments. im not sure bout carbs, but it kind of sounds like the choke is reengaging itself. also check your fuel pressure. your FSM will tell you what it should be, because i dont, because i dont have a carbureted vehicle. tell me, can you smell gas really strong? or smell ANYTHING really strong when its chuggin?

i had the same prob with my 85 22re after rebuild the truck had 1k on it and the exhaust loabs on the cam wore off and caused the truck to have no power.. the only difference with mine was that it only went 20mph on the street and i doubt i would have been able to go up hill with it... i also had a backfire threw the intake when giving it gas

No smell of gas. When having the issue. I will replace the plugs and wires and see what happens. I will also look into the carb adjustments. Thank you both for your input.

Check the fuel filter out before you go messing around with your carb. Might also try a new coil, that helped my rig a ton. Just the coil, I didn't pick up an ignitor as well, because they're freaking spendy (IIRC, new is like $300, a coil is 40 bucks at NAPA)

Thanks for your input. Will try fuel filter first. All of you guy's rock. Finding someone to take the time to actually help without financial compensation is hard to find these days. Thanks a million!

Buy an extra fuel filter when you get one (they're all of 4 dollars at Schmucks) to carry with you. That's kept me from being stranded on more than one occasion.
