Heater core replacement

Im taking out the heater core from my 85 yota and i was wondering if the AC needs to come out with it?

No, the a/c doesn`t need to be removed. what you need to do is remove the complete dash to get to the heater box, then remove the complete heater box to get to the heater core, its not hard to do, but its very time consuming, it took me about six hours when i did the first one and the second one took me four hours. ive done heater cores in two trucks, an 84 and 86 4Runners.

I agree it is a time consuming job and now I understand why the dealer (and most shops) charge so much to do it! Be warned that if you buy an aftermarket core they don't usually come with the o-rings for the connector tubes and the dealer will only sell them to you with a complete heater core.....at about $250! (that's what they told me, anyway) but, you can find some that fit at most any automotive parts store.........why don't they just include them with the new core? ---------Hans
