85 4runner ressurection

We just got the 1985 4runner in at the tow yard I work at.
Im going to check tomorrow but im pretty sure it is a 30day impound, either way we should end up with it.
If we do I am going to buy and fix it, all it needs is a new front clip and some steering rods.

Are there any cool front end monds anyone knows of to do?

This truck is clean to death. Im pumped.

It looks like the drivers head had some fun with the windshield. Are you sure all it needs is the front clip? I'd imagine there would be some frame damage from an impact like that.

i have checked out the frame and it looks all good.

it went down an embankment and hit a guardrail.
its not as much work as it looks like, a good weekend and it will be ready to drive.
My first toyota looked worse when i got it, the frame was way bent, so i have done all this before.

Air chisel, some spot welds and bolts and the body will be all good, then some steering rods and maybe a steering colomn.

anyone know if a 83 steering column might work?
i have 2 83toyotas in the yard.
Im hoping the column didnt collapse on itself but its not looking good at the moment.

Only $1300 in parts? I think that might be optimistic.
Entire front clip, radiator, fan, shroud, headlights, afm is going to be trashed, igniter is probably toasted along with the coil if you can still find them, intake tubes, throttle body and tps could be beefed, fuse box and battery very likely damaged, alternator may be damaged, any a/c parts if it had a/c likely gone (condenser, evaporater all those other little bits that add up), power steering resevoir that should be comfortably sitting on the fender is noticeably missing and the pump may be damaged if it got pushed in that far, probably damaged the wiring harness the runs across the front clip, pushed that far back it possibly got into the distributor, bumper, body mounts, even the washer fluid bottle and pump aren't free....yada yada yada.
IMO, offer them $275, take the front axle, the engine and EFI components, transmission, and transfercase, strip the front to the bare frame, sell the engine and efi stuff, then sell the body and frame to some hardcore 4wheeler looking for the bare minimum to build up how they want it. You'll probably even come out a few bucks ahead in the deal to put towards another rig and have a w56 with gear drive transfercase to use somewhere else or for a cheap core when you get new ones from Marlin
It WAS a nice truck.
Heck, if you just want something fun to do and have the time and money, go for it, but unless more Yotas are conveniently hanging around with cheap parts I think it could take more than what meets the eye.
Just the opinion of a web wheeler

thank you guys for the input.
the radiator is good, amazing i know, all it needs is a fuse box, radiator overflow can and a battery plus all the body stuff.

unfortunatly the money had to somewhere else so i cant do it right now, unless anyone wants a 1995 toyota avalon?

dude, be glad that you didn't buy it,

you would have would up spending 1300$ in misc stuff just to get it right,

how is the frame still okay if it needs a new steering coloumn?

I had a '92 that I wrecked and traded for some work at the local shop, basically the guy who got it didn't have any money in it other than the work he did on another truck for me, and after he fixed and sold it, he barely broke even, and it was in much better shape than that one after the wreck,

If you are looking for a cheap way to get into it, either buy one that is incredibly cheap but still running, and put money into it as you need to replace stuff,

or buy one that has a blown motor, and fix it, I don't know about everyone here, but I would much rather replace a head gasket or even a whole engine than pull apart a bunch of crunched sheet metal and try to make it look right again

that 4runner is only worth the value of the front axle, the fiberglass top, the interior, and the body tub, and maybe the frame, that's it

I don't see $1300 of work there. YOu'll have to cut off a donor front end (inner fenderwells and radiator support, which bead up to the firewall).

All of the body parts can be pulled from a 2WD truck, minus the outer fenders. If you need some credibility here, tell me why my 4x4 with a 2WD cab, inner fenders, and radiator support hasn't failed me yet in the 6 months its been back on the road.

Radiator is only 200-300 bucks TOPS. Any engine parts like a distributor or intake setup, can be pulled off of pre-86 Celicas... not just pickups. Yes, back in the glory days when a Celica was rear wheel drive, they used the 20R/22R(E) series motors.

Basically, every part to recover that truck can be found at a Pick N Pull, minus the windshield. Grilles are also hard to come by, but I've seen em. The only other part you might need brand new are the two fenders. 4x4 fenders are also hard to come by used.

OF course, this estimate is based off of the idea that the frame is straight and the front driveline is operational. Good luck!
