85 22re Speedometer cable not spinning

Hey guys, just sold my 94 ext cab and bought a sweet 85 single cab 22re, so happy!

Not sure exactly how many miles it has because the speedometer is not working.

First I visually inspected the cable (it is a mechanical cable), i looked fine. Yesterday I pulled the dash, hoping the cable just got pulled out...no dice. I drove around without the cluster and could see that the cable was not spinning or even vibrating.

Next thing I want to do is pull the cable from the t-case? I tried to pull it/twist it out but it is really in there, is there a trick?

So if the cable is bad, replace it. But what if its OK, what else could be wrong? There is some kind of gear in there that turns the cable right? How do I service that?

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!!

Here is a pic of the t-case with the speedo cable coming out. Probably a separate issue, but it is definitely leaking from somewhere. Any ideas?

Mine does not work either but I just unscrewed the serrated ring with a pair of pilers and undid it by hand from there. once that was disconnected the cable end just pulled out of sensor(which is bad on mine). the cable part of it is just a square flex drive. I'll be watching thread to see if you geta fix or need a sensor. I haven't found a new sensor yet so...

I have an 85 doing the exact same thing. It is not spinning with the cluster out. I am betting mine is broken just havent messed with it yet. It just spins off of the transmission and pulls out. On the end of the cable, there is a tab that it sits inside of the transmission. Make sure that tab is fully seated into the slot.

Something else I will do at a later time is put the rear axle on jack stands and with it idling at a low speed and the speedometer cable out, I will make sure that the slot that the cable sits in is spinning. If it is spinning, it is going to be a broken cable. The cable is easy to change out. Just need to find out if it is the cable or the transmission not spinning the cable.

Thanks guys. So I got the cable off the t-case. Spun it by hand while I had my friend check the other end, it was spinning...so cable seems to be good.

I don't have any jack stands, so I mounted a camera onto the frame and pointed it at the opening in the t-case where the gear is. Drove it around then watched the video, you can clearly see the thing is not spinning. When I try to spin it by hand it has a small amount of play and seems well lubed.

So what should I do next? Is there a way to service this part?

I wonder if it is the wrong cable for the transmission? Maybe the shaft of the cable is not getting into the tranny slot?

Well it seems to be the right cable because it seats nicely into the little groove. I can definitely see that its the gear in there not spinning, just wondering if its easy to fix or does it need a new t-case?
