I have an 85 4Runner with no tailpipe, holes in the muffler, and a major leak from either the manifold or collector (fumes come in with the window down but NOT with it up and the vent on). I believe it's time to replace the entire system. I'm looking for suggestions on how to do it relatively cheaply and maybe gain some power. I've been pondering the OBX header and maybe piecing some 2.25" stuff back from that. Ideas? Get creative here!

I went with a pacesetter header and a magnaflow 18 inch muffler with 2.25" all the way back. I feel like I gained quite a bit of power, although it does sound sort of rice rocket-ish

Went with LCE Header, 4-1, 2.25" to back with a high flow Magnaflow CAT, Borla then out the back... and like Scottie, I felt a decent gain. NOTHING MAJOR, but definitely noticeable! lol. Doesn't hurt having a decent CAM and Cold Air intake, either.

PS> I only hear a tiny bit of ricer at the top end.. .but it's really pretty throaty otherwise, throughout all the ranges and on the Frwy as well. Plenty of pics on my Build thread of everything, including exhaust, lol.

OMG! That truck is CLEAN! I have some work to do to reach that stage. However, the LCE is out of the price range. I should have mentioned before that this is my DD and not a trail rig. There are a few other things wrong with it that I want to fix, but I have to focus on budget (because the 91 runner is eating it up quickly).

if you search on here IIRC alot of people have had problems with their OBX.

I know. I've seen that there have been a lot of problems. I wanted to see if there were inexpensive alternatives (like Pacesetter) that weren't as problematic. In the end, if it's cheaper to go with a header and OEM back, then I will.

from what has been posted on here, the old downey headers, thorley tri-y or LCE headers are your best options followed by the stock manifold. And anything other than the tri-y or factory manifold you will sacrifice bottom end for mid to top end power. Not that that's a bad thing on a street truck.

Thanks, it was a LOT of work, cleaning it all up and customizing it, but I had LOTS of fun doing it and can enjoy it now. The LCE header, itself, without the back pipes w/O2 hook up, etc, is 199$. If you're planning on doing the rest, from the collector back, maybe you could make 2 C'notes work? lol.... Best to ya, whatever you decide...and HAVE FUN with it, yeah?

Bought a Downey, a new cat and muffler. Now I just need to piece it all together and I'll have a brand new truck (well, as close as an 85 can get to brand new).

Sweet! Did you order them from Jim(Tojo?) Or from a Yotatech Member? Good to hear, and listen, seriously..... that 85 is 10X the truck that MANY new ones are! lol...... Notice a lot of 85 Bronco's or Chevy S10's from then that are still in the condition that most Older Gen Toy Trucks are? Nahhhhhh, lol.

I snatched up the last one Jim had on Ebay. I liked the fact that, aside from it being cheap, the O2 sensor was on the manifold, which is where mine is stock.

Hey, I love driving the 85 around. Makes me feel like I did When my parents bought their first Landcruiser in 82. I feel like a kid again.

Hope it was a high flow cat...don't you need one to get any benefit from the header?

Yep, and everything is going to be 2.25", so less restriction.
