Question 84 4runner headunit wiring harnes question

I got a new headunit for my 4runner and looking around stereo sites all the wiring harnesses I could find are 87+. Is there a plug and play harness available for this install or is it a hack and slash job?

There is already an aftermarket unit in the truck from the previous owner, but I haven't pulled it out yet. I'm kind of afraid of what I'm going to find in there because I don't think it was done properly because the radio cuts on and off sometimes. I'm thinking it's a bad ground, but who knows til I get in there and check it out.

I found another thread on here talking about the different wire colors to use, but it never indicated if there was a simple harness you could buy. Thanks for any help!

Edit: apparently I fail at title spelling

Just find a constant, a key on and a ground and you're good to go.

I searched the interweb for several days, and had to two audio shops looking when I put a u it in my '84 pickup. No luck from what I could find. I'm not saying that a later model kit won't work, but I couldn't find anything for the '84 pickup listed.

It's going to be a cut and splice for the most part anyway. If there is already an aftermarket unit installed, they either have a harness or they cut the factory harness off and spliced it to the head unit harness/pigtail. The latter is what had to happen on mine...

If you already have an aftermarket head unit in the truck it means the stock wiring is already cut.

An adapter will do you no good since there is nothing to plug into.

All you need to do is take a voltage tester and find a wire that gets constant power, a wire that gets key on power and then a ground. Super duper easy.

Then just run your speaker wire however you want.

Thanks guys. That's kinda what I was expecting, but figured it couldn't hurt to ask. I always prefer a clean pnp install, but it won't be the first time doing it the hard way.

85TurboRunner: I fully expect it to be cut already, but I was hoping there might be a pnp harness so that I could fix whatever damage the previous owner did.

Here's a link to your wire colors. You can see the plugs are different before 1986.

You could make your own adapter if the PO didn't slash & gash the harness. Go to Allied Electronics and they probably will have the correct plugs to use.
