22RE Turbo... any good???

I did search to find my answer, but nothing came up specifically. I was just wondering if the turbo was reliable? Is it worth the few extra bucks to swap a 22ret in? I dont need to or anything, just thinking of the future. How does it handle in wheeling conditions??? anyone with experience with the 22ret that could shed some light on the question???

Head over to 4x4wire and read everything you can by Jeff Mosk. His 22rte is putting out 250HP/300lb ft at the rear tires..

I still kick myself for not buying the 87 turbo I had the opportunity to purchase 16 years ago... Yes, they are worth it, especially when well taken care of and slightly upgraded.

Well this Mosk guy has tons of dough into this turbo. A DOA motor, turbo and many other mods. The money spent into that I would rather do a 7MGE swap or a V8 swap. But to answer his question, the 22RET is a great little motor. I hear the stock turbo has tons of lag and runs out of breath. Supra guys used them so you may want to read about it on a Supra board as well. If I had some extra dough, I would think about doing a 22R turbo in my 4x4. I'am slowly getting parts to make my 93 2wd into a 22r converted turbo.

My 1987 turbo has high mileage and still runs strong, going on 180,000 miles this year. The guy I bought it from took great care of the motor, oil changes every 3 months no matter what the mileage was. I run 33" BFGs and on the highway I can run in 5th gear most of the time. The mountains are a different story, 3rd gear but still going aprox 60 mph passing other 4 cylinder vehicles. I also have 4:1 transfer case and that means no chance in heck that the turbo is going to spool up while wheelin. I dont plan on doing anything to the engine other then keeping it maintained and clean. I do not want to mess a good thing up by screwing with it. Just my 2 cents.

I know someone that has an '86 factory 22rte. His truck seems to have just as much torque as my 3.0. I know that he runs premium gas or it clatters badly, it gets about 16 mpg, and the turbo had to be replaced (he said his dad used to drive the truck, and didnt let it idle long enough befores shutting off the motor) Other than that, his truck is a typical, reliable Toyota that does great off road.

The 22RTE has great potential.
It's prone to that turbo failing... well, I say prone, because if not taken care of properly the turbo will fail before the motor does. I've seen them go to over 150k miles and I've heard of them failing at 100k... I suppose it's relative. Manifold is cast iron and is prone to cracking after 100k.. easy fix, just a PITA.

The boost on the motor was mild. 6-7psi peak. The turbo is small. It's expensive to replace. There are other options for replacment.

If you want power out of this motor, the bottom end and head can handle it all day long. Upgrade to ARP studs, a good head gasket, and an aftermarket turbo.. You can adapt the stock manifold to a t3/t4.

The main issue with the motor is that the ECU can't take much for upgraded boost. A better flowing turbo and it's going to peak out at 170 hp or so. If you're willing to discard the stock ECU and go with an after market turbo, there is all kinds of power available in this motor.
Jeff's motor has a lot of money in it, which is true.. I'd estimate that you can get to near 200hp without going nuts with motor cost.

I'm working on a stand alone replacement ECU that will be available at a reasonable cost ($500) - It will be megasquirt, but I'm planning on tuning it for the pickup. Jeff's bought his ECU when Megasquirt was a baby and wasn't as fully featured as it is today.

I have a 22RTE that I'm using as core. I'm on a budget and other than forged pistons, I'm going to try and stay to reasonable cost basis... if you want info as I work on it, send me an email: d_ginther@hotmail.com

yea i just parted my 87 turbo pickup , i loved it ,but the turbo was about shot ,cracks in teh exhaust houseing and leaking seals make for the james bond smoke screen that was fun for fogging yuppies in traffic nore than one has scrambled for the sunroof button befre the smoke rolled in on his lexus , yea the biggest limitation was the computer , they run good ,but i just rebuilt the engine in my 88 runner and as heavy as that thing it ,with 32's i'm sure its about as fast as my turbo truck if i had 31's i got my turbo truck for 600 bucks with a blown headgasket so i got my moneys worth. i have the complete turbo engine and dash harness and insurment cluster for anyone doing a swap along with a good ECU and AFM and 2 setss of injectors and a good head.
