since when does an 84 22re come with pear shaped exhaust ports? I believe the 22re was made before 85 but was in a celica, supra or something of sorts but not a truck but I could be wrong on the truck part. Maybe it's a late build date 84 and in reality it's an 85 engine? I am pretty sure the 82-84 Celica GTS 22re used the early model 22r head. Which means it would have the round exhaust ports. http://www.lcengineering.com/TechNotes/?techid=49 Quote:
Please someone confirm this as I am really curious. You should be fine with an EFI cam in a carb'd engine. Afterall all of the EB cams are listed for either or.

interesting... I'll do some more research.
So far I found that in mid 1984, they switched to the newer style head. The owner of the 22RE says it's an 84.5 motor.

85 model year I believe is the one that has the hit and miss early late styles not the 84 model year. But again I could be wrong. 85 was the first year with a 22re engine at least in the 4x4's.

Ok I just called the guy and had him send me a picture from before he put the exhaust mani on and You were right... it DOES have the round ports.
So I guess at this point I'll be doing almost just as much work to swap my 22R top end on to his 22RE block than if I just had the crank machined & replaced bearings.

'82 was the first year for the 22r-e in the Celicas, they still used a mechanical fuel pump if I'm not mistaken. And vacuum advanced or vacuum assisted (something like that) timing.
I do believe '84.5 was the first time EFI was put into trucks/4runners. Very rare though. For sure '85. Most '84.5 would and could be considered '85 MODEL YEAR though, so its foggy. ![]() OP, why not keep it EFI and get better mpg and moar powa?

I'd like to convert to EFI but I don't have any of the other parts needed. The seller only has the engine.
If I found someone parting out an EFI truck locally, I definitely would.

His motor is from July of 1984 so it is a late model but the seller previously ran it in his 85 truck. So he already has modified the alternator and it already has the power steering on it.
He says that the exhaust mani from his 85 truck bolted up and he 'switched the plenums around on the intake' for that to fit. The only issue I read is that I'll be needing to tap some new holes for my 85 intake to bolt to the 84 head, but I've seen some heads with both patterns so I'll have to go look at it in person. Also since he had it in an 85 truck, he must have already switched out the mounts to fit so no headache there.
