Steering Problems...

Hey,

I am having some issues which I need some suggestions on.

I recently converted a 2wd truck to 4wd. I am running a Trail Gear Hy-steer kit. I don't have an engine in the rig or tranny and tcase, basically just a shell of a truck.

I got everything hooked up and aligned. I was planning to take the rig to a carwash to clean out the engine bay, so i hooked it up to my tow rig and started towing it out of my neighborhood. It turns fine when i am turning right but it locks up and resists coming back tocenter when it turns to the left anywhere near full lock. so here is what I am thinking:

1) Maybe the left side knuckle stuff is looser than the right and doesn't want to return to center

2) or maybe it is too tight and is resisting returning to center for the same reason.

I have checked and rechecked the alignment and it is good, I am hoping that someone out there will have encountered this problem and has an easy solution that I am missing.

Thanks,

Jon

Does it do this with the tires in the air? If so, check it out like that. Try disconnecting the drag link and see if it is the knucles or the box locking up.

shot in the dark here: did you put in a new steering box? or change the pitman arm?
What size tires?
Are you running wheel spacers?
Do you have a steering stabilizer?
im thinking the pitman arm is rubbing on the tire/the pitman isn't centered when the wheel is.
Give us a picture if you can

Perhaps I didn't properly explain...sorry.

The truck is not running thus I have not "taken it out for a drive"

I dragged it around my neighborhood to see how it would flat tow.

I don't have the drag link hooked up, for that matter the steering box isn't even on the truck.

I am thinking that it might just be that the truck doesn't have enough resistance for turning so it just automatically locks and holds. I am going to weld up the steering gear tomorrow so we will see.

Thanks for the input,

Jon

Well sure, without anything holding the wheels straight, they will likely turn one way to the other and you are hosed. Wait until the steering is fully connected before troubleshotting "problems" that may not even exist.
