Lift debate... what should I do?
Hi, I just bought a 79 Toyota 4x4 pickup (79k original miles ) and I'm planning on getting some lift due to the current leafs being shot.
I REALLY want some 33" tires on this bad boy so I was thinking of at least 3" lift.
my main question for you is, if I get a 3" leaf spring lift and and a 2" block. will that force me to fix the steering problem created when you exceed 3" lift or does the block not count?
what about a body lift instead of the blocks?
also, how much would it cost to fix the steering problem?
BTW: I'm a noob at all this car stuff. I just turned 16 last week and this is my first truck. My dad is pretty good at mechanics and can assist me with anything I do.
WHAT amount of lift would look RLY nice wit my 33's?

what do you plan on doing with your truck, if its just for looks then a small lift will be just fine, but if you gonna use it a lot go with a bigger lift. and if im reading your statement correctly your trying to do two lifts, a three inch suspension AND a block lift? leave the block lift out. and just do the new leafs. that will be more than enough for 33s. im putting 35s under 4" of lift.

well first off..you saying blocks..then steering in the same sentence..means blocks up front..BIG NO NO!!!!...dont even throw blocks in the back!..i say get a 3"lift from like rough country i think..(i think they have leafs all the way around) or some lift with no BLOCKS!!!..and just because of the steering.doesnt mean you cant go over 3in..
there was a guy on here with a 7in lift or something big like that rollin on 37's back in the day..and he wheeled the piss out of it..never had any steering problems..sure crossover is better..but the stock will work..i say go with a 4in pro comp and throw some 35's on it..lol

Ebay stores say that there needs to be a steering correction.

Whatever you do, don't get a cheapo lift kit. I'm not saying it has to be expensive, I'm referring to the quality. Search around this forum to get some opinions.

For 33's I would just get a pro comp lift you can get one for around $350. It comes with leafs for the front, add-a-leafs for the back, and shocks

Ok, thanks. My stock leafs are scarry to look at. Very old. The front leafs look bent upward instead of down... I'm now considering smaller lifts but i really would like a little extra height. 3" suspension lift kits are looking pretty sweet!
Hopefully i can find a used power steering box and pump for cheap.
Thanks again guys, u rly helped alot!

The pro comp kit should come with the adjustable drag link shocks and brake lines, you didn't say much else about the truck but before you start lifting it and putting big tires on it make sure everything thing else is kosher, if you you have had it awhile and already know everything is alright, then is doesn't apply but it's very easy to get caught up in the cool stuff we have all been there

with your front springs bending upward you have some negative arch to the springs.
Ed H.'s advice about making sure everything else is good to go before throwing bigger tires on is right on the money. No sense in throwing 33's on it if you can't stop.
you should be able to find a quality 3" lift kit that will not require an extra dropped draglink. That 5" kit you listed mounting in the stock mounting locations is gonna ride rough as a covered wagon.

Yeah. I've been drivin alittle around town and everything seems to work good. I picked it up from a mechanic who did alot of matinence on it.
I posted the 5" lift just to show what ebay said about 3"+ lifts and their steering problem.
Right now money is my biggest problem. Hoping not to exceed $800 on the tires, lift, powersreering and a used heater/ac. That means everying but the lift will be used.

I know there's a guy on this site somewhere who will sell you an entire power steering set-up with everything but the fluid for $200. I was gonna buy one for my 86, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I don't remeber the guys name, but i'm sure if you search power steering you'll find it. If i remember his name i'llpost it on here.

I'm another newb in the EXACT same situation with the EXACT same truck (color and all...just 20k more miles)....Does anyone know at what point you have to start messing with gearing etc. with bigger tires/lift? I think I'm leaning in the same direction as Eggblade, something relatively mild like 3" (to start out with!), but I'm not sure what tires I'll need (height OR width..no power steering either).
I saw all of the help you guys with experience are offering, just wanted to say thanks again. from a newb...

Do the budget lift. Throw your rears in the front, pickup some chevy springs for the rear. If you want get some good shackles. Spend your $$$ on the high steer, shocks and tires. Then after your geared, you can always go back and get one of those fancy lifts.

I have had the Downey 3 inch springs on 3 Toyota 4x4's so far and they ride nicely and flex pretty well with the longer shackles I added. They are a quality spring at a reasonable price. Your old round fender Toy has more room for the oversized tires you want but they will probable rub when you get twisted up. Another option is to break out the sawzall and make clearance. Its going to be one or the other (or both if you really want some clearance).
I never had to change the drag link on my rig until adding the Rubicon shackles and still it was only a precautionary addition. I NEVER have any steering problems. Even with the torque rod off it steers and stops straight.
If you are set on getting power steering you will need a steering box but you might as well get the IFS power steering box and go crossover. I have no experience with those so far but as long as you need a box.....
If you get the cheap springs I think you will hate the ride and it won't flex nearly as well.
Downey's springs come with the teflon pads on the ends of each spring for a smoother ride and better articulation. They don't require any welding on the low side spring perch as they come paired (left and right). They also include the brake line relocation brackets and longer sway bar links (I don't use the sway bar at all). The spring material is good quality.
I would definately check them out or All Pro's springs. If I wanted to go higher on my straight axle I would probably research All Pro or Alcan and get some more opinions from Yotatech. There is a wealth of info from these gear heads here.
Good luck
Pro Comp does have some really nice soft shocks.

Ive got 35s on a 5" skyjacker that I like a lot. But I snapped my steering jarm in half. You can drive it fine on road, but flexed it out and you're screwed. You could go for a shackle lift from Trail Gear on top of some 3" springs. That would be Rad. if you're crawling you want to have flex so dont get blocks whatever you do. Shackles is the way to go. thats how they do it in 3rd world countries!
