A few 1st gen questions please!
Hi all, am going to check out a first gen tomorrow, guy says it only has 63,500 org. miles its a 82 with a 5 spd. how can I tell if it is a true 60k mile truck? besides obvious wear on seat and pedels and such! do the 82s have 22R's? how are they as far as a daily driver truck? how about parts cost and ease of working on it, hate to compare to a ford but easier or harder to maintain and wrench on? brother has a 89 F250. any other pointers to look for? thanks all in advance.

not necessarily, some 82's had a six digit odometer.
-more than likely it will a 22R.
-Check the floor pan, especially on the driver's side, windshields like to leak and cause massive rust. Pull up the carpet or vinyl to check, also check behind the seat in the corners of the cab for rust.
-take a 4 way lug wrench and a jack. examine the front hubs w/o a wheel on to check the bearings etc.
-check the pinion play by twisting the DS back and forth
-the beds like to rust along the seam...I did not think there would be any first gen's left in Minnesota
-parts cost in comparable to other parts. once you get bit, the addiction starts and you start ordering all kind of crap for your new truck.
-as far as how easy to work on--that is all relative to your skill set.

the truck was not very good and I decided against it. it was green, is that even a color from 82? never seen a green first gen, it looked painted at one time. rust was bad. but I will keep my eyes open for another. can anyone point me in the direction of more reading info for first gens? thanks.

well if you have a haynes manual for a 22re it will be the same book.. its pretty much the same engine but its carbed.. has no computer... really good engine to learn and work on and parts are easy to get most times...
wait to find a decent one and mpg will be good for a daily driver!

sounds good. so do the gen 1 trucks have power steering and brakes generally? can you put undercoating or that por15 stuff on any condition frame or does it need prep?
