in my 85, if I was to do it again I would mount the batteries on the passanger side. having the weight of 2 batteries plus the driver on the same side has given me quite the lean to the driver side.
I built my own battery tray out of small angle iron I bought at the hardware store. I cut my wheel well to make it fit low enough to close the hood. And installed the batteries at an angle to keep them out of the way. Dont angle them if you don't have agm batteries.
Using 84-88 tanks is the way to go. Probally get them for cheap at a salvage yard.
