Broken motor mounts??
I have a 1983 toyota 4wd . When I am climbing the motor moves up causing the fan to hit the shroud. I am thinking bad motor mounts or tranny mounts. any ideas of what else it could be???

broken motor mounts are very common-
I am considering a Set of these from 4Xinnovations (just not totally sure they will work with a 1st Gen):

adding a piece of chain as a just in case is a common fix:
borrowed from the Stub's BlueBerry Krunch Build on Pirate-
quickest example i knew of

i don't seem to have a transmission mount on mine, I have a mount for each transfer case (using 4xinnovations mounts (http://4xinnovations.com/pages/drive/casemount.htm) :
trail gear has a mount extremely similar to the 4xinnovations mount for $69 and a stock replacement mount for $110. Both are compatible with stock crossmembers:

the advantage of the stock replacement mount is that it will be quieter, won't transfer as much gear noise to your truck. You might get lucky and find one a good used one in the junkyard or you can try some of these sources:
Toyota Truck Dismantlers: body parts/axles etc

One thing to also inspect is to make sure all your bolts are in place: transmssion to engine, transfer case to transmission etc. also check for cracked areas
