20r wont run after putting in new fuel

UPDATE: fixed flooded 3 and 4 new plugs and she runs again!

I had her running, went to get a full tank from the corner store. Then after 3 days of sitting the truck wont start.

I have chased fuel to the pump- good
i have changed the fuel filter- good
I have checked the inspection window- has fuel 1/2- good
I have checked for spark- good

Doesnt start at all, just keeps turning over.

no start with either/ gas in carb/etc

what can be the issue?

only thing that changed from it running to it not running was a fuel stop.

I have checked the fuel and it is good as i drained it and put fuel from my 89 4runner into my 80 p/u. still no start.

Doesnt really try to start. only thing I have left to do is try for compression but i doubt that would change over 3 days with no other noticable issue

Well if it gets fuel and spark, either it lost all compression (which can be noticed by sound) or the timing is wrong, I can't see anything else. Are you 100% the spark gets to the spark plug?

yes i pulled the plugs and checked for spark and all have a spark.

would jb weld or similar product cause a lost in compression? i dont know the condition of the engine other than it ran when i bought it. coolant is bright green and oil is not milky.

I bought it for 500 with no heater up here in AK, fixed the heater drove her around for 50 miles. put gas in it... let it sit for 3 days... started her ran for 3-5 sec then quit. hasnt started since.

Check your throttle cable linkage

I did added a new throttle return spring prior to the 50 mile drive due to the throttle sticking open. I chased that down to the older throttle style that attached to the floor instead of the firewall. little rust had ate the spring apart and binded it. Quick and easy fix.

other than that what could be wrong on the trottle linkage? what are you thinking?

You want to make sure that when pressing the gas pedal that it opens up the ventruli/s in the carb. Sometimes, depending on how the cable is attached it can come loose and not privide the tension to do that. Follow the whole cable and make sure it didnt come unhooked or is too loose. Mine is connected to a bracket on top of the valve cover. I also have a weber though. I have no idea how stock carbs are setup.

If you got spark, and you put fuel into the carb and it doesnt try to fire it is telling me the fuel is not being released into the cylinders from the carb.

good to know stand by as i check.

when i push the trottle to the floorboard in the truck (wife does it) i do not see any spray into the carb. the truck is cranking over at this point. could that be a bad needle?

just checked all the plugs again. i am getting a spark most of the time. everyonce and a while no spark.

FYI: I am doing this with the plug against the head (by myself) using the video feature of my phone. seams to get a spark, but does this lead to the dizzy?

cleaned dizzy, grounds, plugs and now validated that i have a good spark. pulled the fuel line off the carb and rolled the engine over. I have fuel to the carb.

I do not have fuel in the venturi though. with the engine off or cranking i do not have spirts of fuel in the carb. could this be a bad jet?

ill be checking gas in the carb here in a minute

Just to be clear, if you physically pour fuel into the carb and crank, does it run? If not then I don't think it's a carb problem since you are sure you have spark

My guess would be a timing problem then, since you have spark and fuel gets to the cylinders but still no start. Very unlikely though since you have a double row timing chain, you did not mess with the distributor at all?

I only pulled the cap off to clean contacts. didnt touch the rotor at all. timing was not touched.

Dieseling as in after the key is moved from start to on, the truck continues to try one or two additional times to start.

I pulled the plugs out and
1 was dry
2 was dry
3 was moist
4 was wet.

regapped to .030 and the cylinders and piston heads (checking from the spark plug hole) are moist. I will see if the engine was flooded, dont think it was as i let it sit over night with a battery charger on it.

oil doesnt have fuel smell but at this point who knows...

well now i feel like an ass.

I decided that while i had the plugs off to go ahead and shoot some compressed air down the spark plug holes...

#3 and 4 spit fuel all over me... :ashamed

I flooded the engine. she runs again. thanks for the help

18 bucks in vacuum hoses
8.50 in either and brake clean
37 bucks in plug wires
4 new plugs
12.99 new air cleaner

the feeling when you get covered in fuel: priceless

Thank you for the help
