1983 crankshaft pulley problem

I just recently got my 22r rebuilt and yesterday we started putting the motor back together when it was time to put the crankshaft pulley back on we ran into a problem. The pulley wouldn't go in all the way as if the pump drive spline was stopping it. We have no idea what the problem can be all I know is we went from a single row to a dual row timing chain can this have anything to do with the pulley not properly fitting?

pullies are the same between the single chain and double chain .. only thing I can see impeeding "seating" of a crank pully are the keys in the crank and the keyway on the pully

crank pulley

I also ran into this problem it seemed the crank pulley have about 1/4 inch left and would not go any further. I put everything back in the way I found it for the oil pump. I was originally replacing a seal but now dont know what to do.. How would the key be placed on the balancer?would it be in the grove or slot or???

Oil pump drive gear not installed correctly/not all the way installed...?

If I'm not mistaken the oil pump drive spline/gear is smaller on the dual row timing chain engines(Pre-84) than the single row timing chain engines.

That's exactly what was wrong with mine. Since I switched to the dual chain I had to buy a smaller spline because the original was just a little to big making my pulley not fit right.

The oil pump spline drive is definitely your problem. No dual row "kits" come with the shorter spline drive (that would make too much sense). LCE has them for about $30 or so. Should fix your problem
