Hello to all. I need some help on my transmission. It is a 4 speed. The shifter spins around in the transmission socket. Is this just ware or can I fix it? I am new to the yota. I have had it for about 5 yr and finally decided to rebuild it. This is the only problem I am having so far, after the cone washer battle. lol Thanks Michael

There are grooves in the shifter ball that slide into little tabs. If those grooves are all worn out, then it'll just spin in there. Pull out the shifter and look. I think it's the same on 4 speeds & 5 speeds. Maybe time to either find a less used used shifter, or if you have some metal working skills, make new grooves?

There are some good photos of it on in that link. I guess it's come to light that 4 speeds don't have a rubber bushing in there, so don't go buying one. There's a thread in the Marlin Crawler forum "product support" area about the issue some people ran into, so mayb check that out too.

Hopefully that's your issue; otherwise, I don't know.

your 4 speed is NOT the same as a 5 speen in the sense that the 4 speed shifter goes into the side of the bellhousing rather than straight into the top. This means some parts do not fit it correctly. There is a thread very recently and I have had the same problem with marlincrawler parts that say they fit pre 85 but do NOT fit the L43 4 speed.

No but the shifter ball setup is the same as far as the clip holding it in, and those grooves, so definitely check them out.

Ok thanks for the information. I have found the problem. There was no cup on the bottom of the shifter ball. Also the rubber bushing that goes in before the shifter was missing. The only rubber part was the black washer. I went to the Yota dealer and the new rubber washer was black and the top was green. I have replaced the cup and the rubber bushing and all is well now. It does have a lot of play but it does not spin while trying to shift. The pins are worn a little but I will replace them at a later date. Thanks Michael

Is your transmission an L43 with the side shifter? If so, can you elaborate on this black and green rubber bushing? I recently had my shifter apart ('79 L43 w/side shifter) and I didn't see any rubber bushings anywhere.

I think the L43 is metal to metal where the shifter pivots around. The only non metal would be the little shift cup at the bottom tip of the shifter.

That's what I thought too; based on what mine looked like when I got it apart, and what was said at the Marlin forum.

No I don't know if the transmission is a L43 or what. I can tell you this it does not have the side shifter. Shifter goes in from the top. How can I identify which one I have? All I know is that the black and green rubber washer stopped all the spinning that was going on. Thanks Michael

Maybe yours is the L45 then. I would guess that all L43's have the side shifter, and the L45 is the only other Toyota 4-speed I've heard of that would have been on a first-generation Toyota truck. Does anyone know if the L45 had a top-shifter?

I owe ever one an apology. I have had this truck awhile and just found out that it is a 5 speed. That tells you how much I have driven it. I have had this truck about 3 yr now and driven it about 30 miles if that. When I got it the motor was bad. Running on 1 cylinder number 4. The piston rings were busted on the rest. I am really sorry about the miss communication about the 4 or 5 speed. I really thought it was a 4 speed. Thanks Michael

No problem! I've done worse. If you've got a 5 speed then you should replace the bushing too, as well as the cup on the very end of the shifter.

Yes I did replace the shifter seat. That was the green and black rubber washer. I don't think it is heavy duty like the link you sent me. I think it will hold for awhile. Thanks Michael

Yeah the Toyota ones aught to last a good 100,000 miles.

I just bought a L52 and the shifter just spins around. I took the shifter out and there were a lot of metal flakes that came out with it. I bought a new shifter seat and a new bushing from marlin. Hope that will fix the problem.
