85 4Runner 22RE 5spd, Bay Area CA
- ~144K miles on truck
- been in California all it's life
- stock/original 22re -- Needs rebuild (see below)
- CA registered (through FEB 2014)
- clean title
- 5 speed
- 4.88 gears
- Detroit Truetracs front and rear
- 3" Skyjacker lift
- 32x11.50x15 BFG All-terrains
- roof rack
- winch (cheapo)
- K&N
- Flowmaster
- Tach
Other parts that come with it:
- new engnbldr timing chain kit (TC, TC cover, steel guide, water pump, oil pump, etc. -- on block)
- new engnbldr head gasket and bolts kit in box
- new OEM head gasket in box
- new OEM fuel filter in box
- new TPI bikini top
- new battery
- el cheapo amp
- original gears for the front & rear (4.10s, I believe)
I bought this rig earlier this year off the original owner with the intent to build it. To my ignorance, it badly needed a timing chain and it wore a hole through the TC cover. Long story short, I ended up blowing the HG, overheating it, and the motor was ran with coolant in the oil (for at least a few hours). After pulling the head, I determined that a full rebuild was needed.
For the few months I did drive it I noticed:
- it started with no hesitation
- the motor ran strong
- the clutch grabbed well
- tranny shifted well
- steering felt pretty good even at full lock
- the brakes were a pretty crappy but worked
- everything worked inside
- the back window was a little finicky, but it worked
- AC blew cold
- heater blew hot
- no issues with 4 HI/LO; transfer case shifted well
- the tires were a little old but had decent tread; I was gonna run them for a while
- surface rust/patina on back half of undercarriage
- front main seal leaked oil everywhere up front -- no rust
- birfs are leaking, needs front axle service
- clutch slave cylinder leaks (it's probably lost half ounce while parked for several months)
Overall, the truck is pretty straight. A few dings and scratches here and there. The paint is pretty good overall. The truck was old-manned out (the original owner was in his 70s) so I had to remove some of the Kragen clearance parts off; some remnants remain. The rear bumper in the photos is gone; some of the old lights up front are gone. He had a sun visor on it and when I removed it some holes where he drilled it remained.
The interior is pretty clean. No tears in seats. Everything works. A tear in the headliner where he struggled with the CB installation. I was the first to remove the top. Not smoked in. No crazy PO smells, just smells like an old yota.
No major rust issues but there is surface rust/patina on the back half of the undercarriage; nothing rotted through and no trouble spots.
After I did the timing chain the motor would crank but not turn over. There was oil/coolant mixture in the cylinders and intake and the compression for two of them was out of spec. Hence the teardown. After removing the head it was determined that a rebuild was the best route.
Unfortunately, I just don't have the time I thought I would to dedicate to this (I have several small children and we have a newborn now). I'm just facing the fact that I don't have the time for a build right now (especially since I'm learning). It's still disassembled down to the head. With our newborn, I don't have the time to reassemble so I'm selling as is. I may start reassembly if I get the time or if it's a blocker for a serious buyer.
No trades. Local sale only. Located near Tracy, CA
