Mikestang

This is an easy trail (first 2/3rds is rated 2/10, last 1/3rd is 3/10) that links up the top of Azusa Canyon (Hwy 39) with Angeles Crest Hwy (Hwy 2) about 15 miles north of interstate 210. It's a bit over 26 miles long, with a few miles of side trails. The side trails are pretty rocky and the brush is tight, so you come out with lots of pin stripes. Last Sunday I took my little (little... he's 16, lol) brother-in-law for a 6 hour ride. Spent most of the time driving, so there's not that many pictures. This would be my second real voyage off-road, just having got the truck last month.

Looking back onto the San Gabriel Canyon OHV park entrance. This is where you get the permit and gate combos to run this trail. The trail begins climbing immediately and it doesn't take long to get above 4000'. You can see the trail we came up in the upper right corner.


At the first area to turn out since the staging area at the bottom there's a big concrete emergency water tank for fighting fires.

There some places where you get really close big electricty transmission towers. This part had some little whoops. Headlights are on because there were people riding ATVs up here and I wanted to be visible to them.


Cogswell Reservoir is visible from one of the ridges.

With a couple miles to go to the end, there's a small ford. Not much water in the middle of July, however.


Just passed the ford. Gotta love silver, my truck is FILTHY, but you can't even tell.

wow, this is awesome, ill have to try this when i get my 3rd gen!

should invest in the dupli color spray on bug and rock shield. i think it would protect pretty well against the pin striping

there you go. its for rock chips while driving, but im sure it would help protect some, probably not all scratches tho, but it couldnt hurt.

to access this trail do you actually have to drive into the Azusa Canyon OHV park?
I'm very interested in doing this run. It would be perfect for a friend of mine who really likes those scenic fireroads and lives up there.

Yeah, you do. You have to get a permit from the Ranger, along with the combination codes for the locks on the gates at both ends of the trail. Kinda kills any spur-of-the-moment trips.

It's a fun trail, especially on a clear day because you can see for-freaking-ever from up there.

No, actually you don't. You can also get the permit and combos from the san gabriel river ranger district ranger station in Glendora. The permit and combos are good for two weeks from the date you get them.

You don't actually enter the OHV park to get the permit, you get it from the booth at the entrance where people pay to use the park. I choose to get it at the park since it's only 0.2 miles from the beginning of the trail, but the park is only open on Sat./Sun., and the ranger station in Glendora is only open Mon-Fri, so keep that it mind.
