New Paint Job (Pics)
I think I mentioned I was having my runner repainted. I got it back last week and just got the pictures back and scanned to post. I think it turned out good and the shop sure did an awesome job. I took it to the Earl Scheib place on S. Tacoma Way in Tacoma. I'd recommend them to anyone needing a paint job.
Heres a couple closeups to show how well they masked.

These pics were taken either at the shop or the next morning at the house. It hasn't been polished yet or anything. What do you guys think?

Yes, it was all millenium silver before, I had them do the main body panels like you see.
how much did they charge?
They were running a special at the time it wound up to be just over $500 total.
did they charge you for each door opening?
Yes, it's extra for each door jam, including the hood, hatch and sunroof. I didn't have these done though, so when the doors are open the jams are still silver, makes an interesting look with the silver body moldings around the bottom. They quoted me $60 per door jam, so it would have been an extra $420+tax to have all the jams done to match.
do you have a pic of the engine bay?
No.

No it doesn't have the deep shine of a factory finish. That is achieved by "wet sanding" the paint before it completely cures. My wife and I were both fine with the way it turned out so we didn't get that done but you certainly could...Dick at the shop quoted us $400 for that process. To achieve a full factory look finish aftermarket cost around $4000. At least in my experience.

Hey there John.
I do like the blue. Very nice.
My lead here at work is looking to paint his truck.
So you would recomend Mr. Scheib.
Did you need to do any prep work to your 4runner at all?
Can you P.M. a ball bark figure. My lead just looked at your rig and was impressed.
He lives in Gig Harbor.

be forwarned, my buddie works at a body shop and is constantly redoing paint jobs from earl shieb and 1 day paint places.
they charge so little because they use cheaper paint and doing a cheaper job, (this is only one persons opinion so i dont want to hear from ten different people who want to refute me)
he says he has seen jobs where they paint the car silver but there is purple swirls in the paint from not cleaning the guns between different applications
they dont clean the cars when prepping them and you get hair, lint ,dust in the paint as it cures
paint peels, chips, bubbles, anywhere from weeks to just a few years after getting it done
and they are horrible about standing up to there supposed warrenties
just keep in mind that you get what u pay for.

Yea, I know that a lot of "one day" paint places are pretty crappy. In fact, it's hard to find a reliable paint/body shop period, in my opinion. Which is why I wanted to post and say "hey, here's a good place." I saw 3 or 4 other cars/trucks they painted there and all were as high quality workmanship as my runner turned out. No color mixing or bubbles or anything, so I don't think they were giving my any special treatment.
Why did we get it painted? Well, it wasn't the color we wanted.
Seriously though. We were looking for a red or blue runner with all the options this truck has, but couldn't find one. Then the dealer/salesman showed us this truck and we agreed that finding everything except the color was workable cuz we could paint it later. So we did. WHY looking for a blue or red truck? Without a big long story, my wife is visually impaired after a brain injury from an auto accident 6 years ago. She has trouble seeing muted or low contrast colors. So when we got married we agreed that we would buy her a vehicle that she could see and pick out in a parking lot. So that's why the paint job on a 2000 runner.
I'll definately keep an eye on the durability of the paint and finish and let you know....well you'll at least know if it's not durable, I'll be all "this sucks" and "I should have known!"
P.S. Oh yeah, it acutally took 3 days for them to paint the truck.

John,
Great job and color selection on the paint. Viper Blue. Cool.
One of these days when I have a house, the mod bug subsides on my 4runner (yeah right!), and I have a little cash, I'm going to buy an old BMW 2002tii and fully restore and have it fully painted. I always wondered how good the engine bay would look if they didn't remove every single part in there. Re-reading your replies, i see you didn't have them done. I can't believe those guys charge $60 a doorjamb! Jeez, I mean c'mon, how long would that really take them!?!

Cool color, looks like they do good work
for the money, which sadly usualy isnt the case.
I think a 4runner is going to be my next vehicle,
and all you guys are to blame!
Hey Bob, my Dad had one of those, it was a 72 2002tii.
he had it restored from the ground up. He had lots of performance/handling
stuff done to it. It was set up like an alpina. The motor was all ported
and polished, cosmetically it just looked like a very clean classic bmw with an
air dam and bigger tires and a lower stance, it was painted
kind of a low key gray that gave it a great classic sleeper look.
That thing was a blast to drive, it didn't weigh much and handled great.

Daniel,
Join the club! Great vehicles as you can read here. Read a Ford Exploder forum and THAT will convince you to buy a Toyota!
I'll hit you and your dad up for some good advice.

I like the paint job! It's a pretty blue. I hope it holds up despite the discrediting information. Speaking of paint, I really like the blue on the new Acura's--the one I frequently see on the TL or TL-S. It's really pretty.
Now THAT was a good one. Never heard it before!

I actually did fall out of m chair laughing... lol... I also gave a pint of blood today so that must have had something to do with it!
