PowerTrax Lock Right vs. Detroit EZ?

PowerTrax Lock Right vs. Detroit EZ?

Hey guys,
I am going to go out in the morning to pick up a "pocket locker" and well there are the two main contenders- Detroit's E-Z locker and the Power Trax Lock Right. I was looking at Central 4WD's site where they list the Lock Right for $202.80 (V6/Turbo) and 4Wheel Parts lists the Detroit EZ for $248.00- Is there any fundamental difference in quality? Such as the Detroit being worth the extra expense for example? I need to replace my gasket on the 3rd member, so I had to drop it anyhow. What better reason to get a locker?

6 of one half dozen of the other.

With one, you get the Detroit name. I have not heard or seen more failures of one vs. the other.

I run the Powertrax in the rear and am very pleased. I read a comparison once that helt the LockRight and EZ side by side and the observer reported that the LockRight appeared to be more carefully machined.

I'm a die-hard LockRight fan. You can't beat the price, the documentation is excellent, installation is easy and fun, the street manners are excellent, in my opinion, and it's a true locker off-road. If you put 140 wt oil in the diff, you can hardly even hear it click around corners. I've had no complaints on any surface--even snowpack. I don't regret a thing.

I haven't put one in front because I wouldn't be able to turn the wheel (I'm a lightweight with no power steering) and don't want to increase the chance of breakage, but I feel it's just the ticket for the rearend.

Quick Lok

Well I went to both Central4WD and 4Wheelparts today and I ended up with the QuickLok locker, which is the same as the the Detroit EZ locker, just under a different brand name, and marketed by genuine gear. It was $241. I am concerned because according to the Trac Tech catalog, there is a different part number than the one that they sold me. I show the one that they sold me as the 4cyl one, but the specs seem to read the same. 8" ring gear, 30 spline, 4x4 gas/turbo/diesel. What gives?

Not sure on the part numbers but I'm pretty sure the one you need should be for a 4 pinion I believe, not 2. There should be a cross shaped cut out in the middle of the two pieces for the pinion, not just a straight line. Sorry if the discription isn't very good, but hopefully you understand what I'm trying to say.

I forgot to mention the V6 should be the 4 pinion and the 4cyl should be 2 pinion. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have not looked at a lockright up close so I can't say for sure but I do know that the no slip does not "click" like the lockright. It's more forgiving as far as the "clunk/bang" that sometimes happens with the lockright. I have been in a truck with the lock right and there is a difference. They both work great though as ar as the real purpose goes. Mine (no slip) has been great so far.

I got lucky with mine......got it off ebay and only gave $140 (shipped) for it. It was practically brand new. I installed it myself and it took a total of about 6 hours from jacking up the truck to setting it back on the ground. Not hard at all to install.
