So i got a new 98 4Runner sr5 last friday. I got it after my 1994 blew a head gasket and then found out the rear main had leaked and the clutch was pretty much ruined so my dad desided to suprise me and got me my new one. I like the color alot because there are alot of 3rd gens where I live but none in the color I have its the Cool Steel Metallic. I already did my first mod to it which was install a OEM roof rack b/c mine didnt have one and I needed it to put my surfboard on. I got it on Ebay for 160 shiped which is pretty good b/c Toyota listed it as 240. What I want to know is what are good mods for the 3rd gen for the occasional offroader. I go maybe once a month and am looking to start going on trips up to the orv parks in Nc.

As for mods I would say a rear locker and maybe some sliders...

you have to beg the mods to change it thats why i kept mine simple and for mods deckplate mod isr mods all can be found in the tech section ....

 

Yea I was thinking a little more offroad orented mods but I will deffantly do those two. As for how much I want to spend it will be a process of saving and getting parts over time as I play High School football and we have practice everyday but now that the season is over I will be getting a job. So I mean I'll have money to spend on the truck but not thousands at a time.

 

As you will notice with almost all of the trucks here, most people do some sort of lift involving Tundra Coils. SonoranSteel.com has the best complete kits. I pieced together mine and did all the labor to come up with a solid stance and spent $500 total on suspension, tax and shipping included. However nothing will help any truck more than a decent set tires. What does yours have...how worn?

 

brand new crappy ass highway terains that came on it from the used car dealership my best friends dad owns a tire shop. so what do you guys recomend I know with the 2nd gen I could run 33's stock but what about 3rd gens?

 

I would recomend BFG All Terrains to anybody, but my best friends dad also owns a tire shop so I was able to get the more aggressive Coopers for just above wholesale. The biggest tires you are going to fit correctly if you have 16" wheels is 265/75 R16. Which is just under a 32" tire.

Yea they do, unfortunately they cost more than 15" wheel 31X10.5. Everybody though is going to have a different tire that they like the best for differrent reasons. See what your friends dad can hook you up with for decent money. Off the subject but a good suspension mod is to put some real springs in the back, because if they don't sag already they will. You can get Land cruiser springs to go way up, or 99' 4Runner springs for a barely more than stock height, I went with Downey 2" springs for a solid in between.

 

Does changing the spring require other things to be replaced or upgraded? If I swap them with say land cruisers or any other what would be a good one for the front? And one more question I was looking at the SS lifts and was looking at kit 2 and was wondering what kind of winch it came with and if it came with some sort of bumper or winch compatable brush guard. If so are they both of good quality b/c it is only like 400 more than kit 1.

I don't think they come with winches, but I could be wrong. I only see system 1 and 1.5, then 3.
Somebody else can correct me, but it does not come with a winch, it effects the weight and therefore the lift so it is written there.

Its all listed there, but I bought downey 2" springs for the rear($200+ ship). With Rancho RS5000s($80+tax). For the front I found a guy with a 2006 TRD Tundra that put coil overs on, so I bought his front shock/spring assemblies for $150 which came with Toyota Bilsteins. Then I purchased diff drop spacers, 3/8" coil spacers, and extended studs from Sonoran Steel. It is not as big of a lift that most guys have on this site, but I paid less than half the price. I'll do it correctly when I get out of school.
