Spark plug Replacement now High Idle

Tonight I finally got time to replace the spark plugs while my wife was handing out candy. I have been carrying a set of NGKs in the dash for a couple of months. I replaced the Champions that were in and now I have a high idle. It was right around 1200 before when it was cold, now it is more like 1800-2000. It didn't seem to come down after warming up but I haven't been for a ride yet. I am going to do that now.

Everything is hooked up and no vacuum lines are off. I did find a hole in the resonator/air chamber between the filter housing and throttle body where it had gotten on the manifold sometime before. I taped the hole up really good with duct tape.

I can see that ALL the adjustment screws on the throttle body have been tinkered with at some point. I am wondering if I should just replace that little air collector box with straight tube or what. I don't know maybe tomorrow I will put the rotor and cap on and replace the wires then set the base idle like it should be.

Any thoughts, opinions or suggestions? This is on the 4Runner.

I found the rotor and cap in the back of the truck so I put them on still haven't driven it but I cranked and let it warm up again. This time it idled cold at 15oo, I am going for that dirt road now to see what happens. I guess that they had just tried to adjust their way out of a tune up or either they fooled around with everything trying to fix the "funny" timing problem it had when I got it.

try turning down the idle screw and see if that helps also did you gap the plugs

Yeah I gapped the plugs to make sure. I ordered them specifically for my truck and don't have the manual so basically I just made sure they were all the same. I couldn't tell you what the gap is 'cause the gauge I have is on my keychain and it belonged to my grandad who has been dead since '86 so you can imagine the numbers aren't legible anymore.

I haven't adjusted the idle screw yet I am going to wait 'til after this test run. Funny though, when I got the truck it was loose, (the idle mix screw), so I put a new "o" ring on it and a SMALL drop of loc tite for sleeves and bushings. After the drive when good and warm I will adjust the screw again.

Thanks for the input. Country roads are calling, and it's Halloween to boot!

AaaaaaaaaYeeeeHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You may have figured out that I am native american. So you can guess I am a little suspicious! When I pulled out of the driveway, my trip odometer read 664.8. I started to zero it but I thought that wouldn't be fair, so I went to thee teller machine and sure enough when I pulled out it read 666.0 exactly, and a black cat crossed my path when I was pulling in to fill up!!!!!!!!!!! We did a 12 mile trail in the dark anyway and I am happy to report, my idle dropped down to within spec within a few miles of being locked in.

It seems to be idling at a stop, in gear at right about 900.
Tomorow I will try to adjust base idle according to factory specs.

After reading this it sounds wierd, but I swear every word is the spooky halloween truth. I can't believe I made it home, the rut just started hard and I am surprised i did not hit a deer.

Maybe the ECM just needs some running time to adjust to the tuneup.

95Toyo, I think that may have been the case it seems to be running excellently right now. After I drove it that night it seemed to settle down and after getting warm and cooling down a couple of times it is great.

It just surprised me. I don't do a lot of tune ups but I can't recall ever replacing spark plugs and having the idle raise by a thousand or more RPMs like that.

RezRunner

Glad everything is okay. Do you also call your Runner a 'Rez Rocket'. Back home (Shiprock, NM) it is quite common.

If I called it a rocket I would get laughed out of the room. Some of my dad's cousins in Oklahoma call their 1978 Caddy a rez runner.
